Survivor R becomes the new "Special Car 5"

01/13/2022By Redaktion

Rheinmetall has received a significant order in the area of the strategic key market of internal security. The Procurement Office of the BMI has awarded the Düsseldorf-based technology group the contract for the delivery of the new off-road, protected multipurpose vehicle type Survivor R as the new "Special Vehicle 5". The order includes a fixed quantity of 55 vehicles in the variants for the Federal Police as well as for the State Riot Police. The contract includes a high double-digit million EUR volume, with the total order volume could increase to the triple-digit million EUR range through agreed options for additional vehicles.

With this success, Rheinmetall was able to successfully prevail over the competitor in a Europe-wide tender.

The Survivor R is intended to replace the predecessor model "Special Vehicle 4," which was introduced 35 years ago. In the first step, the delivery of two prototype vehicles is planned for 2022, which will undergo extensive testing including a complete protection certification. The delivery of the production vehicles is expected to start in 2023 and be completed by 2026.

During the subsequent operational phase of up to 30 years, Rheinmetall will also take on a framework contract for maintenance and servicing, as well as logistical support of the vehicles at the locations of the Federal Police and the State Riot Police in three-year increments.

For Rheinmetall, the contract represents a successful expansion of the growing market segment of Public Security. In addition, the project is seen as a flagship for further European vehicle procurements by police and other security agencies.

The German State Police in Berlin, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Saxony already use their own variants of this highly mobile and well-protected vehicle as operational tools for their special forces. The Survivor R had to prove itself in numerous operations, including live fire tests, and was able to successfully protect the lives of the responding forces.

The Survivor R was developed in cooperation with the specialist vehicle manufacturer Achleitner, who acts as a subcontractor for the large-scale project. The final assembly and handover of the production vehicles will take place at Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH in Kassel. The Survivor R is based on a powerful 4x4 truck chassis from MAN.
