Steyr-Mannlicher partners with Rheinmetall Defence to launch new assault rifle RS556, aiming to replace the G36 rifle in the German Bundeswehr. And the Austrians expect this to succeed this time. For this, Steyr-Mannlicher has sought a strong partner: Rheinmetall Defence. And the timing is right, as the German Bundeswehr is clearly looking to replace the G36 rifle. The Austrians were close in 1994. The Steyr AUG was one of the competitors to the current Bundeswehr standard rifle G36 before its introduction. Now Steyr is entering the successor battle with a further development of the AUG: the RS556 (pictured above) is essentially an AR15 variant with many technical features of the AUG, but without its main hindrance - it is not a bullpup weapon. Ernst Reichmayr and Gerhard Unterganschnigg, the CEOs of Steyr-Mannlicher, are ready with the newly developed AUG successor, as reported by the Austrian newspaper "Kurier" today: "And this time, with a strong partner, namely the German Rheinmetall Group based in Düsseldorf. Mannlicher and Rheinmetall will jointly launch the new assault rifle RS556 on the market. The German partner can point to a value-added share of 60 percent in the event of a Bundeswehr order, significantly increasing Steyr Mannlicher's chances compared to the first round in 1994." Known competitors so far and the Bundeswehr's rearmament are Heckler & Koch and SIG. HERE is the full article in the "Kurier".
