Prometheus Design Werx (PDW) is a company from California (USA) that produces innovative clothing, creative patches, and sharp EDC tools. This is the short version, but what really lies behind the name and how did they become what they are today? That's what we want to tell you about here on SPARTANAT."We only have one life in this world, so do good. Have the strength to fight for what is right. Live and laugh with those you love and value. Follow your heart and intuition, and have the courage to go down the new paths that you call your own." – Patrick York Ma, PDW Founder
PDW was officially founded in January 2014 by Patrick Ma and Chris Whitney. At that time, Patrick had already gained experience in founding another world-famous company, as he was one of the co-founders of Triple Aught Design (TAD) in 1997, as well as Rocket World and IWG in 2000."With my first brand, Triple Aught Design, which I founded in 1997, it was a shot in the dark. I had a vision, but no experience on the 'how'." – Patrick
His time at Triple Aught Design not only shaped him, but the market as well. Patrick had a vision at the time, a goal, but he didn't know how to achieve it. Military clothing was to be merged with what was available in the civilian market. At that time, functional mountaineering clothing was only available in bright, vibrant colors, which didn't blend well with military attire.
Therefore, Patrick took softshell jackets that were already being produced and redesigned them. This led to the creation of the now well-known "tactical softshell". Pants also received design modifications and additional pockets. Not satisfied with just that, he also produced knives and offered everything one would wish for as a soldier or tactical enthusiast. Everything went well until 2011. From then on, everything stagnated, and in 2013 Patrick York Ma ultimately parted ways with TAD and the other companies. The reason was disagreements with his then colleagues Brett Eisenberg and David Cahill. But with every door that closes, another one opens.
"They had their affairs for police supplies, they had what was available in the army shops, and of course everything that was issued to them when they were in one of our armed forces. But I was able to take away some of the best ideas and refashion them with the progressive force of the outdoor industry." – Patrick
Chris Whitney had been running a welding and machine shop since 1995. His main focus was modern high-end architecture, but he also produced prototypes in the furniture sector and was involved in product development for alternative energy and self-contained vertical food cultivation systems. Patrick and Chris met for the first time when Patrick needed a specially made part for his motorcycle. A friend referred him to Chris's workshop, and they got talking, realizing that the chemistry was right. When Chris found out that he was already buying knives from Patrick, their friendship was sealed.
"You will never get there if you don't know where you are." - Chris Whitney, PDW Co-Founder
The name Prometheus Design Werx was quickly found. Prometheus, a Titan in Greek mythology, means foresight. He took fire from Zeus and gave it to humans, thus enabling their progress. This allowed objects and tools to be built, leading to the development of civilization. Everything that is developed and manufactured at PDW is intended to advance humanity. The team today consists of a collection of individuals who all share the same ethos and pursue the same mission. Visionaries, designers, craftsmen, former military personnel, rebels, and adventurers are part of it. When they are not working or helping customers, they are out there, in the mountains, on new paths, in the water, or in an unknown corner of a city, exploring, expanding their horizons.
"Less is more. Although it is no secret, it is often ignored and overlooked." - Chris
The logo also has a deeper meaning. It is composed of three hexagonal polygons. Each of the elements has a meaning. The triangle in the middle is the strongest, most representative form. It is the core, the heart, and the alchemical symbol for fire. The three interconnected and modified hexagons represent the interconnectivity and directions that can be planned or unplanned, occurring in life and in undertakings.
A project within PDW is the "Special Projects Division" (SPD). Products produced under this banner are limited in nature. They are sometimes collaborations, experiments, trial runs, or unusual design challenges that are realized. If it turns out that a product is produced more often or is suitable for more than just an experiment, it will be incorporated into the normal product range and will not receive the octopus logo.
"We don't make anything that we wouldn't like, and that we wouldn't personally use." - Patrick
The SPD logo is also unique. It shows an octopus with a Grade 8 screw head and is framed by a modified hexagon. The octopus symbolizes unexpected adaptability, sharp problem-solving intelligence, and exceptional skill. The screw head represents strength, machines, and tools. The hexagonal polygon is a hybrid form, combining the strength of a triangle and the efficiency of a hexagon, as found in nature and reproduced by humans.
"Ultimately, it is adventure equipment in the best and broadest sense; to be used as you see fit to live a life by your own rules. A less ordinary life." – Patrick
Looking at PDW today, they have established themselves as a brand with strong values. They stand for high-quality clothing and equipment Made in the USA. Creative in design and manufactured to high standards, the user can feel that Prometheus Design Werx is at home in nature. With their jackets, pants, backpacks, and knives, one feels comfortable in the outdoors and wants to experience an adventure themselves.
