SIG Sauer was able to achieve another important success with its versatile modular service pistol family P320. On April 13, 2017, the P320 Compact model received certification according to the Technical Guideline "Pistols in caliber 9mm x 19" from January 2008 (TR2008). The document issued by the Police Technology Institute of the German Police University specifies the requirements that service pistols must meet for use by a German federal or state police authority. With this qualification, there is also a more open competition for tenders from authorities that have previously been dominated by a few manufacturers.
“Since 2008, this is the first time we have certified a pistol according to TR 2008. This milestone enables us to access all German police tenders for new service pistols,” said Franz von Stauffenberg, the Managing Director responsible for government business at SIG Sauer GmbH & Co. KG. “Our reinforced SIG Sauer team in Eckernförde was able to achieve high impact in a short amount of time once again.”The P320, based on the P250 developed in Germany and further developed in the USA according to German quality standards, was introduced in 2014. It is a hammer-fired pistol with a polymer grip frame, known for its exceptional ergonomics and modularity. The centerpiece is the trigger unit housed in a stainless steel frame, which replaces the grip frame from a legal perspective. By using a modular system, the P320, available in 9mm x 19 and other common calibers, can be customized on a user or maintenance level for purpose, fit, size, and caliber. In addition to the compact version of the P320 now certified according to TR 2008, a full-size and a subcompact variant are also available. All versions are ambidextrous. The P320 has achieved great success in both the US and European markets.
In January 2017, the U.S. Army decided to procure several variants as the new modular service pistol family "Modular Handgun System (MHS)." Series production at the German SIG SAUER location in Eckernförde for the European market has begun and will reach full capacity in 2017.
