SIG Gate: The P320 case

08/11/2017By Redaktion

SIG Sauer USA is currently struggling with a severe loss of reputation. Their P320 model series is supposed to conquer the market. It also emerged victorious over the main competitor Glock in the US Army tender for a new service weapon – we reported about it HERE. Police units are also partially switching to the new P320 model. However, since the beginning of the week, a video has been spreading like wildfire (we have linked it in the cover image, as well as HERE).

It shows the pistol falling to the ground, rear end first, and a shot being fired in the process. This should obviously not happen. As mentioned in the video, we also want to say: the pistol passes all standardized tests. However, these tests only involve drop tests where the pistol impacts the ground with the barrel or side first. The trigger appears to be the trigger for a fall in the Dallas Police Department, where a falling weapon was triggered - a process is pending.

Almost all models are affected by the problem, except for those of the US Army and those with a different trigger group. The trigger is also likely the reason for the shot being fired. Another video shows a P320 being fired with a hammer - HERE on Tactical Clip you can see it. SIG Sauer USA has now responded by offering all owners a "voluntary trigger upgrade," which is based on parts of the M17 variant, which is the model for the US Army - HERE is the full text on Soldier Systems.

Even though SIG Sauer has now responded to the problem, the ridicule is already there. For instance, Polenar Tactical jokingly list a "drop safety device" on their website (HERE is the link.) - a lanyard with which you can hang the weapon around your neck so that it does not fall to the ground. SIG Germany does not see itself affected by the problems of the US model and assures SPARTANAT: "The P320 Compact TR models offered to German agencies differ in some design details from the standard models of various manufacturers in order to meet the very strict requirements of the Technical Directive from 2008 (TR2008) for police service pistols of the Police Technical Institute of the German Police University. The P320 Compact TR was successfully certified according to TR2008 by the Ulm Proof House in early 2017. As part of the certification, the prescribed drop tests were carried out from different heights on different surfaces. The officially proven drop safety is a requirement for successful certification. The P320 TR passed all of these tests very well. The test results can be viewed HERE." HERE is the SPARTANAT article on the successful certification of the P320 Compact TR
