The Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology, and Use (BAAINBw) procures six weapon systems of the type IRIS-T SLM (Infra Red Imaging System - Surface Launched Medium Range). A corresponding contract was signed today with representatives of the contractor Diehl Defence GmbH & CO. KG. Last week, the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag approved the project.
A crucial tactical advantage of the new system is that both main components of the air defense system (launchers and radar) can be operated remotely from a common command post with minimal personnel. Additionally, it is characterized by its rapid deployability and the ability to engage multiple targets. The IRIS-T SLM fire units can be integrated into the NATO air defense network.
IRIS-T SLM is designed for medium-range ground-based air defense against combat jets, helicopters, cruise missiles, and air-to-surface missiles. Larger drones are also within the target spectrum. Each fire unit consists of a medium-range radar with a detection range of up to 250 km and three launchers, each with eight guided missiles with a range of 40 km. The systems are complemented by a reloading vehicle, two logistic containers, and workshop equipment.
According to current plans, the first system is expected to be delivered for qualification purposes in the third quarter of 2024 and handed over to the Air Force, the future user, starting from mid-2025. More information about IRIS-T SLM directly from DIEHL DEFENCE.
