Sweden, Germany, and the United Kingdom have reached an agreement with BAE Systems for the purchase of 436 all-terrain vehicles of the BvS10 type. The joint procurement, valued at $760 million, aims to support Arctic operations as part of the CATV (Collaborative All-Terrain Vehicle) program.
As part of the three-nation acquisition, the 436 vehicles will be delivered starting in 2024. 236 BvS10 will go to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), 140 to the German Federal Ministry of Defense (BAAINBw), and 60 to the British Ministry of Defence (MoD). The vehicles are based on the latest version of the BvS10 currently operated by Sweden and will include variants for troop transport, logistics, medical evacuation, recovery, as well as command and control.
The CATV program includes a framework agreement that could lead to the purchase of additional vehicles by the three nations, ensuring that the BvS10 remains in production for many years. Sweden is taking the lead and has established a joint procurement office working with representatives from all three countries. This procurement follows the order of 127 more BvS10 all-terrain vehicles for the Swedish fleet last year. Parallel to this agreement, Sweden is procuring an additional 40 BvS10 worth around $50 million under a separate contract.
BvS10 and Beowulf are world leaders in all-terrain solutions. Their articulated mobility systems provide optimal maneuverability in various terrains, allowing them to traverse snow, ice, rocks, sand, mud, or swamps as well as steep mountainous landscapes. Thanks to their amphibious capabilities, the vehicles can also swim in flooded areas or coastal waters. The vehicles can transport personnel and supplies to maintain strategic, tactical, and operational mobility.
The unparalleled mobility of the BvS10 is based on NATO standards for off-road use. Its modular design allows for reconfiguration for different missions, and it can be delivered in multiple variants including personnel transport, command and control, ambulance, vehicle repair and recovery, logistics support, situational awareness, and a weapons carrier with additional mortar capabilities.
