Rheinmetall plays an important role in the modernization of the Hungarian Army. The company manufactures weapon systems and fire control technology for 44 Leopard 2 main battle tanks as well as weapon systems, fire control technology, and chassis for 24 PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers. The order package also includes thirteen HX and TGS trucks. A corresponding delivery contract was recently signed. The order value amounts to around 300 million EUR net. Deliveries will begin in 2021 and last until 2025.
Rheinmetall is partnering with Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) on this project. KMW had received an order from the Hungarian Armed Forces in December 2018 for the delivery of 44 newly manufactured Leopard 2A7+ main battle tanks and 24 newly manufactured PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers. Hungary will thus become the 19th user state of the Leopard 2 and the 8th user state of the PzH 2000.
Rheinmetall is the developer and original manufacturer of the 120mm smoothbore technology used in all versions of the Leopard 2 main battle tank. The same goes for the 155mm L52 weapon system of the PzH 2000.
The globally proven 120mm smoothbore technology has been continuously further developed by Rheinmetall in terms of both weapons and ammunition. The 120mm L55A1 high-pressure weapon system designated for the Leopard 2A7+ was successfully qualified at the end of 2017 and has been delivered and installed for two Leopard 2 user states since mid-2018. The L55A1 weapon system is also capable of firing the programmable multi-purpose cartridge DM11. Rheinmetall also has extensive expertise in tracked vehicles up to OEM level. The chassis of the PzH 2000 have been developed by Rheinmetall.
