The Portuguese Army is transitioning from the G3 rifle to FN Herstal's SCAR-L STD and SCAR-H assault rifles, along with FN40GL grenade launchers and Minimi machine guns. NSPA has awarded the contract, marking a significant shift in their armament.
Until today, the Portuguese Army has been using the G3 from Heckler and Koch as their assault rifle. However, it is likely to be phased out now, as the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has awarded a contract to FN Herstal on behalf of Portugal.
By 2022, they will procure around 11,000 5.56 mm SCAR-L STD assault rifles (14.5 inch barrel), 300 7.62 mm SCAR-H, as well as 450 7.62 SCAR-H PRs (Precision Rifle). They will also purchase 1,700 FN40GL 40 mm grenade launchers for the SCAR. Machine guns are also included in the contract - 850 5.56 Minimi Mk3 and 320 units of 7.62 mm Minimi Mk3.
