Russia's new tanks

04/22/2015By Redaktion

Russia is introducing a new generation of tanks that are expected to be showcased at the grand parade on May 9th. However, images of the new vehicles practicing for this parade are already available. Above is the new T-14 Armata battle tank, with its main feature, the turret, covered. Originally, it was assumed that the tank would have a crew of only two men, the turret fully automated and packed with sensors. The armament was supposed to consist of a new type of remotely controlled 125mm cannon, a 30mm sub-caliber machine gun to combat air and small targets, and a 12.5mm heavy machine gun to directly engage guided missiles. However, the vehicles here have a smaller turret (with a smaller additional dome) than expected in the original revolutionary design. It may have been "downgraded" to have a more realistic implementation.

Initial design studies showed an artillery piece with two 152mm barrels in a turret – hence probably the name "Koalitsiya". However, the parade vehicle only has one 152mm howitzer. Perhaps it was downgraded here as well for realistic performance reasons.
