The South Korean company HANWHA Aerospace has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Romanian state defense company ROMARM for the export of its K9 self-propelled howitzers and infantry fighting vehicle AS-21 Redback.
HANWHA stated that it aims to strengthen its presence in Europe, where it has secured a firm position through the export of K9 self-propelled howitzers to nine countries in the region, including a deal worth $2.55 billion with Poland.
Under the agreement signed on Monday, the two companies will collaborate on the delivery, use, and maintenance of defense systems from HANWHA Aerospace, such as the K9 self-propelled howitzers and the infantry fighting vehicle AS-21 Redback. ROMARM is particularly interested in introducing defense systems from Korean production to replace aging systems.
The Romanian company ROMARM is also considering future exports of military equipment manufactured in collaboration with HANWHA to neighboring countries of the European Union and countries outside the EU.
"If the memorandum of understanding leads to future exports, the K9 self-propelled howitzer could establish a reputation as a proven arms supplier, as it is in use in ten countries around the world," said Son Jae-il, CEO of HANWHA Aerospace, in a statement. "We will continue to expand our presence in different parts of Europe and further expand business beyond Romania," he added.
The decision on the possible signing of a contract between HANWHA and ROMARM will be made by the Romanian Ministry of Defense.
