RING EXCHANGE: And the winner is ... Greece

11/23/2022By Redaktion

As part of another ring swap commissioned by the German federal government, Rheinmetall delivers Schützenpanzer Marder 1A3 to Greece. The first examples of these Schützenpanzer Marder were presented during the parade of the Greek Armed Forces on the occasion of the National Day on October 28, 2022 in Thessaloniki. On SPARTANAT, the Greek-Marder was already visible on October 23rd.

The Greek Armed Forces, in turn, are providing Soviet-made armored personnel carriers and other military equipment to support Ukraine and, in exchange, are receiving Schützenpanzer Marder 1A3. In addition to the delivery of the armored personnel carriers, an ammunition package, integrated service package including training services, and a spare parts package will be provided by the Bundeswehr and Rheinmetall. Delivery is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

The vehicles provided are refurbished Marder 1A3 from former stocks of the Bundeswehr. These Marder 1A3 have been restored for immediate operational readiness at the Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH location in Unterlüß at their own expense since spring 2022. The first vehicles were already loaded and transported to Greece on October 11, 2022, at the Rheinmetall site in Unterlüß.

The armored personnel carrier Marder, developed for the Bundeswehr and still in use there, is one of the most proven weapon systems of its kind worldwide. The vehicle has been modernized and enhanced several times during its service life.

The ring swap is a procedure developed by the German federal government to support Ukraine in its efforts against the Russian invasion in cooperation with European neighbors and NATO partners. NATO partners are providing large equipment from former Soviet production to Ukraine and receiving available systems from Western production in return. Rheinmetall is already involved in ring swaps with the Czech and Slovak Armed Forces - with Leopard 2A4 battle tanks.

But the Greeks are also interested in modern equipment from Germany. Three months ago, the Rheinmetall Team Lynx was in action: the video shows the Lynx KF41 in action with Greek forces in Avlonas, Greece. The most modern armored personnel carrier in the world is a promising candidate for the modernization of the Australian and US armies, as well as for many other professional armies around the globe. It is already in use in Hungary. In addition to its capabilities, the Lynx can also play a key role in promoting local industry and job creation through local production, Rheinmetall promotes its vehicle.
