Rheinmetall: additional 20 Marder for Ukraine

RHEINMETALL has been awarded a contract by the German government to deliver 20 more Marder infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine. The contract was awarded in March 2024 and is valued in the mid double-digit million range. The delivery of this new batch is expected to take place during the year 2024. To date, Rheinmetall has already handed over a three-digit number of Marder infantry fighting vehicles to the Ukrainian armed forces through direct deliveries and exchange programs.

The newly ordered Marder 1A3 version vehicles have been additionally equipped with laser rangefinders, enabling efficient and precise target engagement. The first 20 of these combat vehicles were sent to Ukraine in March 2023 on behalf of the German government. Several more batches have since been delivered, each in double-digit numbers.

Rheinmetall had taken over the refurbished Marder 1A3 infantry fighting vehicles from the stocks of the German Bundeswehr. The company had already begun, at its own expense, to refurbish the infantry fighting vehicles for immediate use in the spring of 2022. The corresponding work has been ongoing at the Rheinmetall facilities in Unterlüß and Kassel ever since.

The Marder infantry fighting vehicle, developed for and still in use by the Bundeswehr, is one of the most proven weapon systems of its kind worldwide. The vehicle model has been modernized and enhanced in combat capabilities several times throughout its service.

Currently, the Bundeswehr has more than 300 Puma infantry fighting vehicles in use, which represent the latest generation in this category of combat vehicles and are gradually replacing the Marder in the army. In 2023, a second batch of over 50 additional Puma vehicles was ordered.
