Rheinmetall: Vast amounts of ammunition for Hungary

03/31/2022By Redaktion

The supply of modern ammunition is considered one of the cornerstones for national and alliance defense. The Hungarian Ministry of Defense has commissioned Rheinmetall to deliver an extensive ammunition package worth several hundred million EUR net. The contract includes the delivery of ammunition for infantry fighting vehicles, main battle tanks, artillery, and decoy systems. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2023, with the contract expected to be fulfilled by 2031. The majority of the ammunition will be manufactured in Hungary.

The package includes 30mm x 173 ammunition in three product variants, 120mm tank ammunition, 155mm artillery shells including propellants and fuzes. Additionally, there are 40mm and 76mm decoy cartridges for the Rosy and Maske smoke systems, and rounds in calibers 12.7mm and 7.62mm.

The procurement of this extensive ammunition package represents another important step for NATO and EU partner Hungary in modernizing its armed forces. The modern ammunition also enhances interoperability with other partner forces.

"We are extremely honored that Hungary once again trusts us to modernize its armed forces," said Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger. "We are very much looking forward to the intensive collaboration with our customer in another key area of military capabilities."

With this contract, Rheinmetall becomes a significant pillar for the supply of ammunition to the Hungarian armed forces. The company will supply ammunition for the three main combat systems of the Hungarian Army, the Leopard 2A7+ main battle tank, the PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzer, and the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle. Hungary has initiated a comprehensive modernization of its army, such as the procurement of 218 Lynx infantry fighting vehicles from Rheinmetall in 2020. These vehicles will replace older Soviet-made vehicles in the armed forces.

Rheinmetall intends to serve the customer country as its home market with domestic manufacturing in the future. In this regard, Rheinmetall is currently establishing one of the most modern military vehicle production facilities in Zalaegerszeg, western Hungary, where the first Hungarian-made Lynx is expected to roll off the assembly line in 2023.

This contract also underscores Rheinmetall's role as one of the key ammunition suppliers for European and NATO armed forces. The portfolio ranges from infantry munitions to medium-caliber and main battle tank ammunition, mortar and artillery shells, propellants, and decoy systems.
