Combat Vehicles

RHEINMETALL is working on the future truck of the US Army.

01/30/2023By Redaktion

Rheinmetall's subsidiary American Rheinmetall Vehicles from Sterling Heights, Missouri and GM Defense LLC from Washington, DC have been awarded the contract for the first phase of the U.S. Army's Common Tactical Truck (CTT) program. The goal of the multi-phase program is to replace the U.S. Army's family of heavy tactical trucks by producing up to 40,000 vehicles worth up to 14 billion U.S. dollars.

In 2022, the two leading defense companies entered into a strategic partnership to participate in the program. They bring together two world-class developers and manufacturers to create a modern tactical truck that enhances soldiers' capabilities through future technologies. These include advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for increased safety, enhanced off-road capabilities, cybersecurity, machine learning, artificial intelligence, improved survivability and fuel efficiency, as well as other new technologies.

The team is offering the HX3 Common Tactical Truck (HX3-CTT). The HX3 is the latest generation of the highly successful and battle-proven HX family, which is in service with a number of NATO states and U.S. allies. The HX truck family is based on the commercial truck portfolio of MAN Truck and Bus, which brings a high level of commercial components into the fleet - a priority requirement of the U.S. Army in the CTT program. The next-generation HX3-CTT system is characterized by improved mobility on and off-road, integrated survivability, and an open digital architecture that supports ADAS and enables autonomous vehicle operation. In conjunction with the open architecture, the commercial backbone of the HX3-CTT will promote continuous modernization and enable rapid capability enhancement through technological advances. With a global presence in both current military user nations and commercial dealer networks, the HX3-CTT provides the U.S. Army with a foundation for optimized life cycle costs and service support worldwide.

Technology for the future: The HX3-CTT offers a modern, interchangeable, protected cabin design, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and drive-by-wire operation. The new electrical architecture with open systems allows for rapid integration of leader-follower, teleoperation, and fully autonomous capabilities that focus on protecting the most valuable asset - the soldiers.

Commonality in the family: The HX3-CTT is the new, forward-looking variant of the globally successful HX family of tactical standard vehicles. It is characterized by an extremely high level of commonality and modularity across different variants: transport, swap body system, tanker, and long-haul tractor unit. The HX family, configurable from 4x4 to 10x10 chassis, can meet any military requirement.

Modern commercial technologies in the DNA: The HX3-CTT benefits from major advances in commercial vehicle technology, safety, fuel efficiency, and emission reduction. The HX family has been optimized for military use and is therefore immediately deployable. Leveraging commercial technologies reduces costs and obsolescence risk, increases availability of spare parts, and simplifies maintenance.

Allied interoperability: The HX family has been sold to 20 customers worldwide, including an active allied user group. These include the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Austria, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.
