The dilemma is always the same: What do I take with me and how much storage space do I have? The gear is always too much. And the backpack ends up being too big to be constantly carried around. However, the Helmet Cargo Pack is a good example of a successful compromise: as much storage space as a Modular Assault Pack plus a large compartment for the helmet. Actually, the perfect storm pack. We took a look at the Helmet Cargo Pack from Warrior Assault Systems (WAS).
On the person: the Helmet Cargo appears rather large towards the back. This is due to the packed helmet. Otherwise, it has a slim figure: its dimensions are 42 by 24 cm with a depth of 10 cm. In total, it has a capacity of around 12 liters, enough for a day pack. From the front, you can see the padded shoulder straps, which can also be secured with a chest strap. D-rings on the shoulder strap are good attachment points, e.g. for a hydration tube coming out of the pack.
Here is a detailed view of the shoulder straps and a view that shows they can be detached. Then the person gets a storm pack that can be mounted on the Plate Carrier with the two MOLLE strips. Extremely practical!
Top view: In the middle, the opening for the hydration tube or possibly for a radio cable. On the right and left, a MOLLE loop each, to which something can be attached if something needs to be fixed on the side of the Helmet Cargo.
So small and so many pockets: there is the large helmet compartment (left) on the outside, which has enormous storage space and can also accommodate a jacket or a ball (civilian); on the flap of the helmet compartment, there is also a pocket (center) and on the top of the main body, there is another one for small items.
And this is the culprit after which the entire backpack is named. A helmet is placed in the cargo net and you immediately see that it fits perfectly! By the way, correctly identified, it's an EXFIL LTP from Team Wendy. The compartment itself has mesh on the sides and is tensioned upwards with two clips and sideways with one clip each. This secures the helmet in place.
Inside, the WAS Helmet Cargo Pack doesn't surprise us. Mesh for small items and a zippered back panel where the 3-liter hydration bladder belongs. And that's all you need …
On the sides, there are two additional pouches that provide additional storage space for small items that need to be quickly accessible. MOLLE for attachment is on the front of the pocket. Behind the pocket, you can reach through to the bottom seam, which closes. This means you can insert something here and secure it, for example, with the loops on the top of the pack.
Last look at the bottom: already visible is the mesh from the helmet compartment. There are also loops at the bottom, so you can strap something here, for example, a sleeping mat or a bivouac sack that you want to take with you. The tension straps of the helmet compartment are longer on the bottom and are waiting for something to be strapped on below. On the outside of the helmet compartment, there is again MOLLE and a patch for a patch above.
CONCLUSION: The Helmet Cargo Pack from Warrior Assault Systems is a small, fine backpack that impresses us. The practical size matches excellent craftsmanship. Thanks to the helmet compartment, we finally know where to put the headgear. It makes the storm pack suitable for urban and civilian use as well.
The Warrior Assault Systems Helmet Cargo Pack is available in various colors (MC, ATACS, ATFG, and Coyote) for 139 euros. Seen for example at Recon Company or Gearmaniacs.
Also included in the Helmet Cargo System: the logo of Warrior Assault Systems.
