There are knives that would make Rambo blush. This is one of them. The Walther XTK X-Large Tactical Knife Tanto can't even be said to compensate for something in its owner's possession: at first glance, the knife is made for the much-quoted zombie apocalypse - or for defense against dinosaurs, as we successfully tested.
Oh my God, Walther! Almost 40 cm of tool come in the packaging. The first impression is already gigantic.
The carrying system is divided into two parts: with nylon and straps it goes to the hip - well, more like the entire thigh - and then a plastic sheath is added. This makes sense, the rough piece doesn't need to be strapped on, but rather fits in or on the backpack as a tool. The sheath prevents worse.
The knife in all its glory. Alligator meets punk, we would say. Here are the sober technical data:
- Blade shape: Tanto
- Blade steel: 440C stainless steel
- Handle material: plastic
- Blade length: 210 mm
- Overall length: 372 mm
- Weight: 601 g
The handle is from Walther, as can be seen from the labeling. And the handles also connect the entire line of knives in style. It fits well in the hand, with a glass breaker at the back. But let's be honest, glass never had a chance with that thing.
The blade itself is a Chinese design monster. Rambo plus archaic, with a rough steel that fits well for rough work. If you look around, you can find the same knife with different handles and very similar shape variations at the Chinese shop.
Comparing it with a pocket knife of normal size - here a Pohl Force Bravo 1 Gen 1 - it's clear: this thing is made for other purposes. Cutting, snipping, delicate work is not its forte. And anyone who walks around with it in everyday life definitely has one that's too short. In fact, this knife is too big for civilian life, but as a tool, it can be quite practical.
In the past, pioneers had so-called "billhooks" for rough treatment of shrubs and wood. In chopping and hacking, this Walther with its weight is great. The edge holds up tolerably, but this thing is no masterpiece and there's no need to be hesitant about sharpening it. A barbaric utility blade. A rough block needs a rough wedge.
It works great for peeling work. Bark comes off easily. The description says that the round notch in front of the guard is actually for that purpose. Oh well...
The saw at the front, on the other hand, has not proven itself in the slightest... With a sly trick, it might form a gap in the bridge? Better let the mass work and chop away.
CONCLUSION: Yes, oh my God, Walther. A rough tool that may fulfill its purpose for rough work. Chop down, scrape off. Otherwise, it goes in our backpack, because otherwise everyone thinks we have a short circuit.
You can find the Walther XTK X-Large Tactical Knife Tanto at ASMC for 79.99 euros.
