REVIEW: RAZOR Active Hearing Protection

02/20/2023By Redaktion

Hearing protection is very, very important when shooting. Well, it doesn't always have to be the high-end active noise cancelling with radio communication. It's enough if the noise is reliably dampened, and if it's also an active hearing protection, even better. We took a look at the RAZOR hearing protection from Walker's.

The Walker's RAZOR hearing protection is a relatively inexpensive model. Optically, it is very appealing and sleek.

What's interesting about the shape is that the Walker's RAZOR hearing protection is thicker at the top and narrower towards the bottom. This makes it very comfortable when aiming with long guns.

On the left side you will find the rotary switch to adjust the volume of the "Hear Throughs". Very simple, but it works. Below in the picture, you will see a 3.5 mm audio jack. Here, you can connect a radio device, phone, or MP3 player. This way you can also use the Walker's RAZOR hearing protection as a somewhat conspicuous headset.

On the other ear cup, the battery compartment is hidden. Simply slide it up and you can easily replace the AAA batteries. Two batteries are included in the delivery.

The headband is well made and provides a good grip. Even with longer wear, we did not experience any pressure points. Overall, the Walker's RAZOR hearing protection sits comfortably tight on the head.

On the sides, you will find a small Velcro field each. Two small US flags are included in the delivery.

First, we tested the Walker's RAZOR hearing protection with the standard pads. These serve their purpose. Overall, the hearing protection is very effective. After wearing them for about three hours, we had no problems with these pads. The background noise with Hear Through is noticeable but not disturbing.

The manufacturer also offers better Gel Pads. You can see them on the right in the picture. Compared to other gel pads, these are quite stiff. However, they are very comfortable to wear, and the noise insulation is even slightly improved.

Replacing the pads is simple. Just place a slotted screwdriver in the groove and pry it open. The new pads can be simply pressed on.

Here is the interior of the ear protection. Since everything was designed more on the outside, the noise reduction for an affordable ear protection is really very good. However, the "Hear Through" feature cannot be compared to a high-priced model. You have limited directional perception and it always sounds as if you were standing in a large, empty hall and everything is being played through a too small speaker. Don't get me wrong, you can hear everything and the "Hear Trough" works perfectly, but the sound quality is not the best.

CONCLUSION: If you are looking for a well-protecting active ear protection, you can't go wrong here. Your hearing will be protected and yet you can still communicate normally with others. The quality is very good for the price. Everything is well made and there are no strange plastic smells. We also find the design very well thought out and appealing. Only the speakers inside provide a somewhat unusual sound, but after five minutes you get used to it. Overall, a very useful ear protection - at a very appealing price.

The RAZOR ear protection is available from us for 89.90 euros in Flat Dark Earth.
