REVIEW: Ur-Tactical Light Weight Wind Jacket

The wind, the wind, the heavenly child ... is a cruel creature. Nothing against a fresh breeze. When it gets stronger, the windchill becomes a serious threat. It cools you down quickly, you catch a cold, a minor thing really, but the man is out of action. That's why it's worth having a windshirt with you. Today we are taking a look at the Ur-Tactical Light Weight Wind Jacket for you.

It's called a jacket because it can be fully opened. Classic windshirts, like the Level 4 worn by US Special Forces as part of the PCU, only have a zipper in the upper part, so you have to pull them over your head. But the jacket has advantages, it's easier to put on, the user can also keep their rig underneath.

The wind jacket from Ur-Tactical is cut rather baggy, which also has its advantages: it can accommodate all the gear underneath, if you don't want to take it off and put it back on over the jacket. And if the equipment should go over the wind jacket, it would be close-fitting anyway.

The hood is cut wide, allowing the wearer to wear a helmet underneath. If not, there is a simple adjustment mechanism at the back of the neck to customize the hood.

It has a functional bill in the front, which the wearer could shape if it were a bit firmer. The jacket protects from rain, but not for long. It's simply a wind jacket, not a rain jacket.

When the hood is not worn, the jacket closes at the top with the collar. It's sufficiently high and not tight.

The commander feels much better when he can slide his hand in Napoleon style. A chest pocket makes it possible.

And at the bottom, the jacket has two large pockets where the wearer can bury their hands when faced with more "standing and waiting" situations. This can happen quite often.

The interior with the sewn pocket, also showing the tag from Ur-Tactical. The jacket can be folded into a small size that fits into one of its own pockets. Very practical. It still weighs 210 grams (size L), but has a format of approximately two Red Bull cans (the small ones).

Unfortunately, the bottom closure does not have an elastic band, allowing wind to come in from there. The material is a thin nylon fabric with ripstop.

The sleeves close with elastic bands. That's good.

CONCLUSION: A reliable wind jacket, ideal in its compact size to pack into storm gear or even the thigh pocket and put on when it gets windy or there's a need to stand around. If you also pack a light fleece sweater, it's already a big help. Ur-Tactical offers the Wind Jacket in two versions. One with breathable nylon, and one without this feature. If you're just standing around, the latter is enough. We would always go for the former, because if the wearer has to move around in the windshirt, they will get sweaty inside if it's not breathable. That wouldn't be the right place to save money ...

You can get the Ur-Tactical Light Weight Wind Jacket in various colors - Black, Coyote, Ranger Green - and camouflage patterns - Multicam and AOR2 - directly from UR-TACTICAL. The price ranges between 48 and 78 dollars.
