REVIEW: UaRms TOR-D VN Helm

Helmets do not protect against a falling sky. But otherwise, they are quite good and protection is important. UaRms, a young company from Ukraine, were not satisfied with the available options in their country for obvious reasons. They promptly started producing ballistic helmets. We took a close look at their flagship, the TOR-D VN, which is available in Germany at BEST PROTECTION.

This is how you look with the TOR-D and the additional Side Protection BSP-V. These are intended to be worn in combination with earmuffs. Therefore, they protrude slightly from the head. However, there is also the BSP-F model, where the side panels lie flat against the head. Here are the technical details:

Material: 96% Kevlar Aramid, 4% PPS fiberglass

Protected area: Size L - 1110 cm²

Protection class: NIJ IIIA

Weight: 1400 +/- 200 g

Sizes: L (52-58 cm) and XL (59 - 62 cm)

From the side, it looks less spacey. The design is very reminiscent of an Ops Core helmet, but somehow all helmets look the same these days. The TOR-D has a protection class of NIJ Level IIIa, providing protection against fragments and handgun ammunition. Upon purchase, a copy of the ballistic test is included. It is made of 96% Kevlar Aramid and 4% PPS fiberglass.

Velcro areas are essential for a modern helmet, so they are present here as well. The accessory rail accommodates all items designed for Ops Core.

The back is very unremarkable. You can clearly see the protruding BSP-V side panels. These add about 3.5cm on each side. With them, the helmet is no longer lightweight. In total, it weighs a proud 1,800 grams. Without the additional armor, it still weighs 1,400 grams.

A top-down view. A Velcro area for e.g. MOHOC cameras or lights. The helmet surface is completely smooth.

The most important aspect of a helmet, besides its protective function, is the suspension system, which includes the harness and padding. In this case, the proprietary KRONA and DISK 2 systems are used. The helmet shell thickness is approximately 12mm and tapers to 14mm at the edge.

For the TOR-D VN, the KRONA padding system was chosen. It's somewhat reminiscent of the EPIC Air padding system from Team Wendy.

This system consists of shock-absorbing gray pads and beige comfort pads. The comfort pads come in two thicknesses, one set at 5 mm and the other at 10 mm, allowing for a customized fit.

The central support of the padding can be removed separately. Wondering what that's good for?

So that the earmuff headband has comfortable space and avoids very uncomfortable pressure points.

The neck padding with adjustment dial is also familiar from Team Wendy. In our opinion, this system is one of the best on the market and is therefore commonly used by many other companies as well.

The adjustment dial is located just below the edge of the helmet. But have no fear, it is designed with usability in mind.
