Wet is not cool... Especially not when you have been standing in the rain for hours or even days and get soaked to the bone. Special Operation Forces (SOFs) are often exposed to extreme conditions. It's no wonder they also need special protection. The Protective Combat Uniform (PCU) is the choice of American SOFs - from SEALs to ODAs. Level 6 of the PCU protects against rain. SPARTANAT has taken a closer look at the Gear - consisting of a jacket (pictured below) and pants.
The jacket from L6 has a modern cut that is not far behind TAD Gear. That's where the similarities end. The material of the jacket and pants is simply coated nylon. Both are supposed to be a bit roomier because the rain suit should be worn over other clothing - BDU or PCU L5. The details can be seen in the image here (click to enlarge): The zippers are the black, waterproof ones from YKK. The sleeve has cuffs with foliage Velcro; Inside, the tag from Orc Industries is visible (see feature image). And you can also see that the welded seams are taped over again.
The pants to the jacket: They have gathered ends at the top and bottom. The high zippers on both legs are practical, making it easy to put on the rain gear, even when wearing boots. L6 is noticeably darker in color compared to L5.
Looking into the waistband: Here you can see the tag from Orc Industries again. The black straps could be used to attach suspenders, but a belt also works with the pants. There is also a flap in the back of the waistband that can be folded up to ensure it doesn't get wet at the lower back. Although with the length of the jacket down to the buttocks, there should be no real risk.
CONCLUSION: PCU Level 6 is a classic rain suit. Those expecting high-tech gear (and may have paid a high price for it on Ebay) will be sorely disappointed. L6 is nylon - nothing more, but also nothing less. The set has its advantages: the compact size stands out, otherwise L6 is only intended for "static operations." Standing guard in bad weather. L6 does not forgive too much movement or exertion. This rain gear is not breathable - what doesn't come in, doesn't go out. Those who sweat will get wet. But those who don't move much will stay dry even in the worst weather.
The PCU L6 is available directly at Orc Industries. The jacket is on sale for $45.80 (original price: $66.99), and the pants are also on sale for $45.80 (originally $58.99). Orc does not ship outside the USA, so those who want to buy directly should have friends in the USA. For those who prefer Ebay: "PCU L6" has been seen on there for prices ranging from 80 euros to (unrealistic) 200 euros.
