Thirsty? Drink! Best on the go from the backpack with a hydration pack. But what is the best choice? Camelbak Antidote? Source? Hydrapak? We have compiled a few hydration packs to create a comparison. To be able to use compact backpacks like the Flatpack from HSP, we have stayed in the 1-2 liter range. Camelbak was left out as the recent reviews of the Antidote unfortunately were not the best in terms of seal tightness.

Our test is not intended to highlight the best hydration packs, but rather to show where the differences, strengths, and weaknesses lie. The volume, the required volume when filled, the coupling/hose/nozzle, closure, taste, filling with beverages other than water, and cleaning options were examined. All hydration packs were tested in various backpacks over several days and hung up to dry in between phases.

Source WLP 1.5 liter (Right)

Volume: 1.5 liters

Dimensions: 23.5cm x 41.5cm

Weight: 190 grams

The WLP 1.5 liter is one of the two civilian hydration packs we tested. Like all new models from Source, it has the Quick Connect connection for hose and nozzle, which can also be disconnected even when the system is full. The special feature of the WLP bladder is its shape. Instead of a continuous piece, the WLP splits in the middle leaving a hole. This results in a relatively flat expansion of the bladder compared to normal systems. The closure is the typical Source sliding closure that securely seals the hydration pack. The thick material is BPA-free and completely taste neutral. The only negative aspect is that cleaning the bladder is a bit more difficult due to the division. Furthermore, the bladder is very large for a 1.5 liter model, so it does not fit in the HSP Flatpack.

Source WXP 2 liter Storm (Left)

Volume: 2 liters

Dimensions: 19.5cm x 37.5cm

Weight: 220 grams

The WXP models from the Tactical series are already considered classics among hydration packs. They are available in 3 liters and the 2 liters presented here. The newer models from Source all have a center divider to keep the profile flat. However, they are only available in the 3 liter size. The WXP 2 liters has the typical bulging behavior, resulting in a very deep shape, as seen in the pictures. Therefore, it loses height and just fits into the Flatpack, making it a favorite in terms of volume. Otherwise, as usual, Quick Connect closures, taste-neutral and sliding closure for cleaning. This model also has a screw cap in addition.

Source Kangaroo 1 liter

Volume: 1 liter

Dimensions: 19cm x 20.5cm

Weight: 160 grams

The Kangaroo 1 liter collapsible canteen is brand new. Its predecessor was 0.75 liters in volume and had only a screw cap, but the current model has a slightly larger volume and the great sliding closure. The depth of the hydration pack and the compact size make it the perfect companion when less fluid is needed. Like other Source models, it comes with the Quick Connect closure and the great taste-neutral material.

In conclusion about Source:

All hydration packs have a neutral taste, are completely leak-proof, and impress with good workmanship, moderate prices, and plenty of accessories. You can buy all bladders, hoses, and nozzles separately. With the UTA filling adapter, the bladders can be completely filled from the outside. Water and sports drinks are no problem, the material is excellent for cleaning. One identified weak point was the Quick Connect at the nozzle in one of the hoses: during use, there was a small crack in the plastic that no longer properly sealed the nozzle, resulting in a continuous loss of water.

Hydrapak Elite Shorty 1 liter (Right)

Volume: 1 liter (according to the manufacturer)

Dimensions: 14.7cm x 23.5cm

Weight: 140 grams

Hydrapak is relatively new in the hydration pack market but has quickly made a name for itself and is now integrated as a standard hydration pack in many outdoor brands. There is now also a military line, and due to compatibility with Source and Camelbak, as well as competitive prices, Hydrapak has become a serious competitor.

The Hydrapak hydration packs are made of a BPA-free silicone-like material that is elastic and extremely durable due to its nature. The advantage is that these hydration packs can be turned inside out from the inside, allowing for perfect cleaning and drying. Unfortunately, the material does not handle sports drinks as well - the discoloration is clearly visible in the pictures, which cannot be removed even after a wash cycle in the dishwasher.

The Shorty 1 liter has a bite valve like Camelbak, which can also be closed to prevent accidental opening.

Unfortunately, there is no quick release for the nozzle, but the other end of the hose can be removed with a quick release - even when filled. The great thing is that the Hydrapak connectors fit Camelbak and Source, but not the other way around.

The closure of the Elite Shorty is like the Source sliding closure, which, on the bladder, is securely sealed with thick tabs.

In addition to the discoloration issue, it should be noted that you can't quite fit 1 liter in the bladder, it's about 900 ml.

Final thoughts on Hydrapak:

If you only use water and use hoses from Source (with the Hydrapak connector at the lower end), you get an excellent system in a top weight and size. In theory, you could fit 2 hydration packs horizontally in the Flatpack, giving you 2 liters of volume. Hydrapak hydration packs are the most affordable in terms of price.

CONCLUSION: Whichever model you choose, with Source and Hydrapak, you're on the safe side. Keeping in mind that Hydrapak works best with water, and if you opt for a tactical model, you get a high-quality and durable hydration pack for a reasonable price. There's not much more to say about Source, they know what they're doing and are beyond doubt.

All hydration packs can be purchased from various online retailers. They range from 20 to 40 euros.
