How do you transport all your stuff? You need a big box! Ideally stable, lockable, decently large, and maybe with wheels? When comparing, it quickly becomes clear: something like this is usually expensive. However, if you are willing to make a few compromises, you can still find what you need: the Gorilla on Wheels. This box has been with us for half a year now and in the end, we were surprised. But read for yourself.
When the Gorilla on Wheels arrived, the enthusiasm was limited. The box is large, lockable, and has wheels. However, it doesn't seem very stable. When you open the lid, the whole structure is quite thin and wobbly. Well, let's give this thing a chance and use it. Let's see what happens. But first, the specs. The Gorilla has a capacity of 148 liters. The dimensions are approximately 94 cm wide, 44.5 cm deep, and 35.5 cm high. Plenty of space. The box is relatively lightweight, weighing only 6 KG. The size meets USPS requirements.
On the front, there are two metal latches and a carrying handle.
The handle is particularly useful for pulling the box out of the car or off a shelf. Above the handle, there is an eyelet to secure the cargo with a lock.
Deep handles are recessed into the two long sides, which work well for carrying and pulling. Pulling? Yes, indeed. The Gorilla has two all-terrain wheels that do their job very well.
The transport box is made of plastic (recycled). The bottom is reinforced, so larger loads are not a problem. Despite the crossbars, the side walls and lid are relatively thin and soft, so the Gorilla definitely has weaknesses there. More on that later.
The lid has a rough structure. There are circular elevations at the corners, probably intended for stacking.
Although our first impression was not fantastic, we have actually taken the Gorilla with us everywhere when we are shooting for our reports, or even just heading to the range. The huge cargo space easily accommodates a complete set of gear - or photo equipment, light stands, spotlights, and anything you want to capture. Throughout the time, we have had no problems with the box - yes, it's not the most stable, but it has never let us down and nothing has broken.
The only defect we created is on the lid behind the eyelet. The housing broke when we stood on it. The Gorilla is not very sturdy.
Closing the lid also requires some skill, as the side walls tend to deform slightly when loaded. So you may need to push here and there to ensure everything closes. The corners also lift slightly, as can be seen in the video.
CONCLUSION: All in all, we are quite satisfied with the Gorilla on Wheels. It has its flaws and is certainly not designed to protect its cargo 100%, but if you are just looking for a good transport box with wheels that is a decent size, the Gorilla is your best bet. The biggest advantage is its price: compared to similar boxes of this size that also have wheels, you will end up paying twice as much.
You can get the Gorilla on Wheels in black for a fair 80€ at ASMC.
