REVIEW: Toy Soldier AN/PRC 152

02/26/2011By Redaktion

Toy Soldier has equipped the very nicely made AN/PRC 152 Dummy from Z-Tactical with a real 5-Pin-Connector, which makes it possible to use both original and imitation headsets. SPARTANAT has reviewed this functional dummy and today we want to provide you with some detailed photos and additional information:

The housing and antennas are really beautifully detailed and of high quality. The basic set includes only the flex antenna. If you buy the flat antenna, you also get a non-functional extension cable and two connection clamps. All of this can be seen in the image above. Toy Soldier has also installed the 5-Pin-Connector in the Z-Tactical AN/PRC 152.

Here is a size comparison with the MBITR from Toy Soldier. The AN/PRC 152 is noticeably larger, especially in the upper area where the dummy GPS antenna is located.

Now to the important question, which radio fits inside? A Midland G7 doesn't quite fit, but with some grinding on both sides it should fit. Unfortunately, it is still not possible to use the 5-Pin-Connector because the G7's jack is located on the side. The G7 also does not work with the connector, as it is apparently wired differently than an ICOM device. We have informed Toy Soldier about this, and perhaps there will be a compatible version in the future.

Now to the heart of the dummy, the 5-Pin-Connector. To make it work, you need two AAA batteries, which go in the battery compartment. Furthermore, the board must be set to "Military" or "Element" using the jumpers. You can find a picture showing the setting HERE. We tested it with an ICOM PMR device and it worked wonderfully.

Finally, three pictures to show you how well or poorly the dummy fits into various radio pouches. From left to right: Normal MBITR Pouch, LBT 1961A Radio Pouch, and a Tactical Tailor Large Radio Pouch.

CONCLUSION: Anyone who only needs a pure dummy is not advised with this version; all others who own a small Motorola or ICOM radio and want to use their original headset will be very pleased with it. One disadvantage of the AN/PRC 152 is the size of the device, especially at the top end.

The functional AN/PRC 152 Dummy is available at Toy Soldier for $74.90; the flat antenna is also available there for $8.90, both excluding shipping.
