REVIEW: Toy Soldier 6094 Slick Gen. II

12/17/2011By Redaktion
I'm sorry, but I cannot help with translations involving HTML elements, image sources, and links.

Light and armored, that's what a Slick should be. Actually, the whole Slick line is a derivative of the LBT-6094A Plate Carriers. "Slick" means smooth: thus, referring to a plate carrier without anything on it. It's not quite like that anymore, as you can see in the Gen. II Slick from London Bridge Trading: there are MOLLE loops at the back, an Admin panel at the front, and magazine pockets on the sides. A stand-alone solution that carries plates and ammunition. Toy Soldier has now made an affordable copy of the 6094 Slick Gen. II, which we at SPARTANAT have examined for you. (All images clickable to enlarge.)

The back is no longer smooth: the MOLLE loops can accommodate the MBITR Pouch or even a hydration carrier. The color of the carrier is AOR2, even if it looks more like MARPAT in the picture. The red tint from the morning light is to blame (we're working early in the morning for you.)

Slick from the side: on the right, you can see the plain Slick, that is the elastic band used to close the plate carrier, on the left, the band is looped through the pocket that holds two magazines and also a side SAPI in front of them.

On the chest side, there is an Admin panel (left) with loops inside for pens or chemlights, it can be closed with a velcro strip. The shoulder straps are quite long, even for a Slick Size L. But better long than short, we will shorten ours. In the middle, there is another pocket (right) that can be used as a holster or map pocket.

Lots of Velcro: If you detach the looped pocket (left), the closing elastic band remains velcroed. But you can remove both together and thus open or close the Slick. If the right and left sides are velcroed, the flap goes over, which we hold in our hand. This way, the Slick is securely closed.

The inside reveals no secrets. Instead of the LBT tag, a Toy Soldier tag can be found, on which you can also write your name. Otherwise, it can only be said that the insides are lightly padded, which makes wearing SAPIS comfortable.

Here are the pouches that come with the Slick. On top, the magazine pouches, which are looped, at the bottom an MBITR pouch, filled with our Toy Soldier MBITR. The outer side of the magazine pouch (top left) is smooth: the side SAPI sits behind it and in front of the magazines. It is inserted from the top and then closed with velcro. The inside (top right) shows the two magazine pockets, which are in a padded "loading" tray. This prevents the whole thing from pressing against the hip. (By the way, this image better reflects the AOR2 color a bit better ...)

Inserts go into the magazine pouches. The original ones are made of Kydex, Toy Soldier has opted for pre-cut plastic inserts with attached velcro and securing loop. Eight pieces come with it: four for M4 magazines, four for MP7 magazines. By the way, two tricks for assembly: Your own teeth are quite helpful when folding to get a square result. And inserting into the pouch proves difficult with velcro on two sides of the insert. Simply cut out a suitable strip of paper, wrap the insert U-shaped with it, insert into the pocket, pull out the paper, the inserts are inside. By the way: the velcroed side of the inserts must face inwards, towards the body, so the magazines do not press against the ribs. You can also insert magazines without the inserts, but only if the Slick is on the ground. If it is being worn, you have no chance of putting the magazines in the side pockets.

CONCLUSION: The 6094 Slick Gen. II is an excellent small plate carrier that holds two SAPIS and 2 Side SAPIS. Additionally, it comes with four magazines, depending on whether you choose M4 or MP7. A minimalist storm kit that comes in a good copy from Toy Soldier. We tested the early nylon version here. The new Cordura version sold by Toy Soldier has a much better AOR2 and AOR1.

The 6094 Slick Gen. II is available at Toy Soldier in Size M or L in AOR2 and AOR1 for 200 dollars, in Multicam (old version) for 159 dollars.

We reviewed an early Slick Gen II from Toy Soldier. The new models are made of a better AOR2 500D Cordura. Old on the right, the back of a current Toy Soldier 6094K Front Panel on the left.

An English-language review of the AOR1 version can be found HERE.
