"Hello operator, can you hear me?" The troublesome issue of connection while radioing. It would be good to have a different antenna with you now. Or fresh juice, because the battery is just about to die. The service-provided backpacks or carrying frames for radio bags are usually not very satisfactory. Fortunately, there is the Modular Radio Pack from Tasmanian Tiger, which makes the life of the radio operator easier. We took a closer look at it.
This is how the 25 liter backpack looks like when packed on a person. It offers a large main compartment, two attached pockets, and a fixed Beaver tail. The Modular Radio Pack is made of 700D Cordura and the PALS slots were burned in with a laser. The dimensions are approximately 51 x 27 x 13 cm.
The Padded Back-System is used as a back system here. A very simple construction. A stiffened back panel is located inside and stabilizes the Modular Radio Pack well.
The hip belt is also kept simple, but it serves its purpose. Those who do not need it can detach it. It offers a total of 5 x 4 PALS slots for additional pockets.
The 7cm wide, anatomically shaped shoulder straps distribute the load comfortably. They are equipped with a quick-release buckle for quickly dropping the backpack. A sternum strap is also included.
The straps are provided with a zipped cable guide. This prevents snagging and ensures orderliness.
Unfortunately, what was missing was horizontal slots or webbing to hang the handset. So it hangs a bit slanted and awkwardly in front of the chest.
Here is the Modular Radio Pack from the side. The Beaver tail is very suitable for storing a helmet.
Inside the Beaver tail, the operator finds large rubber loops and an elastic mesh compartment. Useful small items can be safely stored here.
On the front, in addition to a Velcro area and a 7 x 5 PALS field, there is also a small zipped front compartment.
We untied the lateral lacing of the Beaver tail to give you a better view of the two attached pockets. You can also attach additional MOLLE pouches here as there are enough PALS available. The backpack is wonderfully customizable on the outside.
The lower compartment is about 26 cm high and wide and can be completely unfolded. Inside, there are a multitude of compartments and sections available to you. The entire radio room goes with everything the radio operator needs in terms of paper and pens.
The upper compartment measures approximately 26 x 19 cm. It is also equipped with rubber loops and a zipped mesh compartment. For added security, there are also two D-rings.
In the zipped bottom compartment, there is a reversible rain cover. This is a great addition because, on one hand, the cover protects against precipitation while the orange cover can be used as a positioning signal.
The main compartment of the Modular Radio Pack is lined with Velcro. This is where the radio fits securely. The Radio Pack is designed for radios RC 117 F, TRM 6020/21, SEM 70, and similar sized models.
We prefer it classic. Even a "good old" AN/PRC-77 fits here, although there won't be much space left.
