The Mil Ops Pack 80+24 from TASMANIAN TIGER is designed for deployment. It has already been spotted during an exercise in Norway. We have reported on it here and shown the deployment images. Now we want to take a detailed look at this backpack, which easily accommodates living room, kitchen, and cabinet.
The Mil Ops Pack 80+24 measures 83 x 34 x 21 cm and offers a pack volume of a total of an incredible 104 liters with its side pockets. The empty weight is approximately 4.20 kg and, like most backpacks from TASMANIAN TIGER, it is made of sturdy 700D Cordura.
Not lightweight, but it is designed to carry large loads over an extended period of time. That's why the V2 Plus carrying system was chosen. A very good and well-thought-out system, as we have already come to appreciate in other excellent backpacks from TASMANIAN TIGER. Height adjustment is crucial.
The carrying system is the most important interface on any backpack, it is the connection to the person wearing it. It largely depends on how good it is, how well one can carry the backpack with heavy loads over distances. The V2 Plus carrying system is solidly executed and efficient. It also wears comfortably with a vest underneath.
The hip belt ensures a stable fit during movement and relieves the wearer through the hips, what more could you want?
It can be easily tightened... This is easily achievable with the Mil Ops Pack 80+24, as you just need to pull the sufficiently long webbing forward instead of backward to tighten it.
The buckle for loosening is located on the side of the hip belt. MOLLE on the hip belt is largely avoided with the Mil Ops Pack 80+24. A MOLLE row with three columns allows for attaching pouches that are useful here.
In the Mil Ops Pack 80+24, the sternum strap, like everything on the backpack, is of high quality. This strap holds the shoulder straps together, making it easier to carry.
These shoulder straps are padded about 2cm thick. As a result, larger loads can be comfortably carried without causing any discomfort. The inclination of the Mil Ops Pack 80+24 can also be adjusted with straps over the shoulder.
There are three different attachment points available for you to find the perfect carrying feeling.
The hip belt cannot be removed from the Mil Ops Pack 80+24. Of course, the giant backpack also has a support system that provides the necessary stiffness and carrying comfort for heavy loads.
A sturdy carrying handle should never be missing.
The Mil Ops Pack 80+24 even has two of them. One on the back and one on the front. This helps with picking up and setting down.
Two straps are led longer on the underside. Here you can attach your insulating mat or other gear to the Mil Ops Pack 80+24. Two ice axe loops are also included.
On the front, the Mil Ops Pack 80+24 is equipped with a flap designed for transporting a helmet. When filled, it looks a bit like the snake in "The Little Prince".
This flap can be easily removed thanks to Velcro, in case you don't need it or prefer to use the MOLLE underneath.
You have eight rows of MOLLE available and the elastic drawstring is already attached from the factory. It can also be used or removed as needed.
On the sides, the wearer will also find plenty of MOLLE and attachment loops for skis or other elongated gear that one might bring on official or private hikes.
There are also two spacious storage pockets at the bottom. Ideal for a water bottle that you need quick access to.
There are two side pockets with 12 liters of space each included. Hence the "+24" in the name of the Mil Ops Pack 80+24.
These bags are easily attached using MOLLE/PALS. They are very secure and also fit on other backpacks. Perhaps these additional bags will also be available for purchase separately in the future.
Inside, there is an elastic mesh compartment available. Additionally, there is an attachment point for hydration bladders at the top.
Where there are hydration bladders, a hose passage is essential. This is also the case with the additional bags of the Mil Ops Pack 80+24.
Attached to the Mil Ops Pack 80+24, the 12-liter additional bags almost seem tiny. After all, there is a total of 24 liters of storage space, which is equivalent to a classic daypack. By the way, this nice bag could also be easily mounted on a plate carrier backward... just saying.
Now let's talk about the storage space of the Mil Ops Pack 80+24. The backpack is designed as a top loader, meaning everything good goes in from the top and comes out from there as well.
The opening is equipped with a snow skirt and a zippered grab handle. There is also an additional drawstring at the hem.
The main compartment. Here you have about 60 liters of space. There are attachment points on the left and right for hydration bladders or small items that you don't want to lose.
However, further thought was given to the Mil Ops Pack 80+24. A pure top loader would be impractical for something of this size. You would have to empty everything completely every time you need something from the bottom. At the bottom of the Mil Ops Pack 80+24, you will find two buckles and a large zipper to easily access the lower half of the main compartment.
This allows you to open up the bottom half of the main compartment and easily access everything. Inside the main compartment, you will also find device retention straps for PRC 117, TRM 6020/21, or SEM 70. These can be removed when not needed.
The main compartment is spacious enough that the Mil Ops Pack 30 - HERE in the SPARTANAT Review - fits easily inside and there is still plenty of space for jackets and other items.
At the very bottom there is an additional compartment for the sleeping bag with about 20 liters of storage space.
This area is separated from the main compartment by a zippered bottom. If you want to use the full length of the Mil Ops Pack 80+24, you can do so quickly and easily. Very practical.
The lid is equipped with two rows of MOLLE and has a total of three compartments.
The largest compartment is closed with a two-way zipper and has no further subdivisions inside. Only a key hook is available.
A narrow zippered compartment can be found on the front. There is also a large Velcro area.
On the underside of the lid, you will find the third compartment. Small items well sorted and all papers easily accessible at the top …
The lid of the Mil Ops Pack 80+24 can be adjusted in height very well, in case the backpack gets a little fuller. And that's its purpose after all.
At the end of our review, we want to show you the Mil Ops Pack 80+24 from all angles again. Here is the frontal view of the carrying system. Despite the 80 liters, the Mil Ops Pack 80+24 is a relatively narrow backpack.
This impression is also maintained in the side view.
This is what 80 liters of storage space look like. Actually quite simple and unspectacular. But many details and intelligent solutions.
Even from above, the compact shape of the Mil Ops Pack 80+24 can be easily seen.
Even in moving images, the Mil Ops Pack 80+24 looks very good.
With the Mil Ops Pack 80+24, we are ready for longer stays in the forest, mountains, or wherever.
CONCLUSION: The Mil Ops Pack 80+24 is a fantastic multi-day, maybe even multi-week backpack. It offers more than enough space for everything the wearer needs on extended missions, and thanks to its wonderful carrying system, you will still enjoy having it on your back after a few days.
