REVIEW: Stippling by Black Trident

02/19/2021By Redaktion
Recently we acquired a Glock 17 Gen 5 with the idea of not keeping it entirely original. Those familiar with Glock pistols know that there are a variety of options for modifying them.

Black Trident offers Custom Kydex Holsters as well as stippling for anything plastic. During their event in Tattendorf - we reported on it HERE - we took the opportunity to try out some variations and realized, yes, we want that too!

So we made an appointment with Black Trident. They ask what you would like. For those unsure, they can provide inspiration and discuss what is possible.

Stippling can be done on a large or small scale, with different patterns and areas that can be worked on. We opted for the rough classic version, the all-around package with double undercut and thumb rest. Since we don't want to use extra frames for the Glock, the stippling goes around the back as well. The package costs 250€, but it's worth noting that since stippling is a custom solution, it's recommended to have a conversation, as the cost can vary depending on the complexity.

This is how our frame looked before the work. Black Trident was kind enough to document the process and take some photos for us.

It begins with a lot of sanding, as the frame needs to be smooth for the stippling process.

First, roughly remove any unevenness.

Sanding the double undercut and preparing the thumb rest in between.

Finishing with finer sandpaper before moving on to the stippling.

Here we can see the hot tip, because what comes next is a trade secret. Only with a lot of practice and experience can you achieve a nice result that doesn't look like it was chewed up by a dog.

And this is what the end result looks like for us. Extensively with a coarse rough pattern for maximum grip. This way, moisture, mud, and dirt can come, but the Glock remains firmly in hand.

The Double Undercut. By removing material, the hand is higher and closer to the barrel, which has a positive effect on handling recoil. The stippling under the trigger guard covers every contact surface where the hands rest.

The back also delights. Around the eyelet, as with the other openings, it was beautifully worked around. Fortunately, the stippling doesn't go all the way up, otherwise it would be somewhat uncomfortable on the hands after longer shooting sessions, between the thumb and forefinger.

Here is the other side, which of course looks equally beautiful and uniform. Experience definitely pays off.

The thumb rest, which stands out particularly well due to the slant, is also completely covered with stippling.

Perhaps not for everyone, but we love it. Stippling naturally wears off after some time and is not as aggressive as on the first day. If delicate hands can't handle a rough pattern, there are also finer options.

Here, the work of Black Trident differs from alternative laser offerings. Laser stippling is not always possible all around and especially not as rough.

CONCLUSION: We are very satisfied with the stippling and also feel an improvement when shooting. The Glock feels more secure in the hand, requires less readjustment, and the recoil can be controlled a little better. Additionally, it looks very elegant.

For those who also want to enhance their piece, find more information HERE.

As mentioned at the beginning, Black Trident offers stippling for anything that is essentially plastic. The website has some examples, such as knife handles, or even the grips of an AR15 can be worked on. Therefore, we will probably come back when the AR15 has arrived.
