May the Spork be with you! For those who don't want to eat their dishes with their fingers in the great outdoors, they need cutlery, preferably combined, ergo SPORKs (in German: Göffel), the best of Gabel (fork) and Löffel (spoon). Today we looked at four representatives from Sweden and want to briefly describe their advantages and disadvantages.
PRIMUS Lightweight Cuttlery
Let's start with what is not actually a Spork but just normal cutlery. It is made of heat-resistant polycarbonate, weighs 26g with the string that holds it together, and functions like ordinary tableware. Among the four cutlery items, it is the second most stable, but more on that later. The optimal solution for those who are not fans of the Spork.
PRIMUS Folding Spork
This cutlery can be folded very small (just over 10 cm long) and therefore easy to store. In a more precise sense, it is even a Spork-knife, as the fork has a serration on one side. Weighing only 10.5g, it is the lightest competitor, unfortunately also the least durable. This Spork likes to break at the joint if handled roughly. And when hungry, one can get rough...
LightMyFire Spork
This classic Sporknife is solidly made and at 10g also very lightweight. A transport case is available that can hold up to two Sporknifes. This case weighs 19g. The orange Spork in the lower part of the image shows the predominant form of failure. After 2 years of excessive use, the spoon part broke off when scooping very frozen ice cream, but the fork can still be used perfectly. A forgivable failure, we are inclined to judge.
LightMyFire Titanium Spork
What's better than a Spork? Right, one made of Titanium. It not only looks very elegant but is also very stable, and people always react with an "OOH, Titanium!". Weighing 20g, it is the "heaviest" among the four, but with a touch of space research. The boiling soup can also be comfortably stirred with it, unless it is hotter than 1,300°C, because that is the melting point of Titanium. The middle part is sandblasted for a better grip.
CONCLUSION: All Sporks serve their purpose perfectly and are easy to clean. The biggest differences are in size and price, and for the ultralight backpackers among us, of course, the weight.
Available at Comrade for: Primus Lightweight Cuttlery 3.95€; Primus Folding Spork 1.95€; LightMyFire Spork 1.95€; Titan Spork 13.95€ (all excl. shipping).
