REVIEW: SPIE In/Exfiltration Rig

07/30/2011By Redaktion

If you want to hang out as cool as the gentlemen in the image above, you need the SPIE-Rig. Here, SPIE does not stand for Spy but for "Special Purpose Infiltration and Exfiltration". It was developed during the Vietnam War to quickly get soldiers in and out of the jungle with just one helicopter. We were able to get an older model and want to show you what it can do.

This is how the Rig, developed during the Vietnam War, looks when worn. It's actually a very simple design without much frills and especially comfort. The shoulder pads are easily recognizable, which are actually completely useless unless you are hanging upside down. In newer models, the padding has been integrated into the crotch area, where it is much more useful. When hanging, the Rig cuts very uncomfortably at a very delicate spot.

Since the Rig restricts movement when worn, the previous owner made a modification using Velcro. This makes it possible to stow the leg straps on the side. A good but also peculiar construction. The Velcro on the shoulders to secure the attachment strap was also added afterwards.

Now a few more details. The buckles are just like those on a parachute harness. They can be quickly closed and also quickly opened via a lever. The black carabiner was not included, we bought that separately. With this photo, we want to show that the attachment point is just above the head.
Lastly, a picture of the label.

Conclusion: A real rarity nowadays, especially because there are now better versions available. Still works just as well as back in the day. The hope that a helicopter will pass by remains ... But hey, always ready!

Available occasionally on Ebay.com from $50 to $250 (!)
