REVIEW: SOG Tactical Tomahawk

09/15/2015By Redaktion

What could be more martial than wielding a Tomahawk! That's what we thought when we acquired the SOG Tactical Tomahawk. Okay, the one in the picture has already been pimped, but even in its standard version, the Tomahawk looks menacing. We took a closer look at this tool and equipped it with accessories:

Just a few technical details:

  • Overall length: 40.0 cm
  • Blade length: 21.0 cm
  • Weight: 679 g
  • Blade material: 420

The good part comes delivered with a nylon sheath, which we found impractical. That's why we made something ourselves – but more on that later. The design of the Tomahawk is strongly inspired by that of the Vietnam-Hawks. A clear, unadorned shape that does not disguise the purpose of this axe.

We were not satisfied with the grip of the plastic handle, so we wrapped the lower part with Paracord and the upper part with leather. To conceal the transitions, a "Turkish crown" was added. Instructions for this can be found at ITS Tactical. We are considering replacing the Paracord with leather, as it is actually quite slippery.

As mentioned earlier, we were not satisfied with the nylon sheath. It's a black, bulky thing that closes with snap buttons and has a belt loop. Nothing special. We wanted something lighter, and after some research on the all-knowing internet, we came across the solution shown above. Such a thing used to be made in leather in the past, but Cordura is much more tacticool and we had some left over.

Simply sewed two matching pockets and connected them with round elastic. The blade protector is now ready. The whole thing weighs less than 30 g and serves its purpose very well.

Now the Tomahawk still needs to be attached to the equipment when not in use. So we sacrificed a no longer needed Pop Flare Pouch. Cut off the bottom, shortened the tab, sewed on a new Fastex closure and Velcro – and the matching pocket is ready.

The "Tomahawk transport bag light" (we just invented that word) is attached to the equipment with a proven MALICE clip.

CONCLUSION: SOG delivers a solid ax with its Tactical Tomahawk, which can be wonderfully used as a weapon as well as a tool. By the way, we always used it as the latter, and we intend to keep it that way in the future. The Tomahawk provides a wonderful platform to unleash your creative decorative instincts through the art of knot tying, as you can easily see.

The SOG Tactical Tomahawk is available at BLACK SHADOW for 72.95 Euros excluding shipping.

The SOG Tomahawk in devastating action.
