Outdoor Research © should be a household name for any military and outdoor enthusiast. The company is not only popular among civilians such as climbers and survivalists, but also with the military. In America, their gear is simply referred to as OR Gear. OR has built a strong reputation in the military through innovative design and high-quality construction. Today Resch wants to introduce you to the Outdoor Research Overlord Glove Short.
The glove stands out primarily for its exceptional design. Unlike its "tactical" counterparts like Oakley, Camelbak, Wiley, etc., this glove comes without extra features such as knuckle and finger protection. In general, the glove can be seen as a high-quality upgraded standard Nomex glove, but with much better quality. The base material is made of "Wolverine Wool," which is fire-resistant and extremely breathable. The seams are neatly double-stitched. The leather used has an excellent grip structure, and even delicate tasks such as typing on keyboards or using phones can be easily done with this thin yet durable material. Now onto the next important point: the size. In the photos, a medium size is shown, intentionally slightly smaller. This is not a problem, as the attached cuffs make it easy to slip the glove on - it feels like a second skin.
Personal note: I have been using this glove for almost a year now, and it has become part of my everyday carry. Whether it's evacuating casualties during combat or doing pull-ups in the gym, this glove holds up. Initially, I found the leather to be a bit too thin for my liking. However, I must say that besides my Mechanics gloves, I have rarely worn such a sturdy yet fine glove. The seams are well-constructed, and even after heavy work with, for example, the partially sharp-edged MG3, the glove has shown no visible damage.
CONCLUSION: The price-performance ratio is right, with good quality and craftsmanship at a reasonable price. What more could you ask for?
Unfortunately, there are no sources in Europe as OR Gear is only sold in America, for example at US-Elite Gear. Alternatively, keep an eye on eBay - where the average price is around 50-60€. Also available in Foliage green, as shown here in Tan.
