Who doesn't know this? Caught in the rain during a hiking tour and suddenly everything is wet. The hut tour disaster! For this - or rather: against it - there are not only rain covers for backpacks, but also so-called "pack sacks". These are usually waterproof, ultralight storage bags. Of course, they are used more versatilely than a rain cover. You can use them as an inner lining for the backpack, make the travel bag waterproof, tie them to the kayak, or simply lash them to the luggage rack on the bike. We tested the "Dry Bag Ultralight" from Ortlieb.
Ortlieb likes to work with roll closures, which simply guarantee the best waterproofing and at the same time the easiest operation. Simply roll the two strips at the opening five to six times and then close the snap - done!
Through the valve at the bottom of the pack sack, you can either let all the air out or back in again, making the pack even smaller. For attaching, the bag already has an extra loop at the bottom.
The pack sack is available in different colors and material thicknesses. The "Ultralight" that we tested is already very robustly built. The material does not feel delicate at all, more like that of a lightweight rain jacket.
Conclusion: There is almost no expedition without products from Ortlieb. A waterproof pack sack with roll closure, valve, and attachment loop. And made in Germany. Done. Perfect. And let the rain come... (Well, let's say that.)
The Ortlieb Ultralight Pack Sacks are available in sizes 7, 12, 22, 42, and 75 liters in the colors Olive and Stone Gray at BLACK SHADOW. Prices start at Euro 16.95 for the smallest and go up to Euro 35.95 for the largest.
