What is the foundation of all life? Water! In the military as well as civilian life, Camelbaks (German: drinking backpack) are very popular for transporting the vital fluid. However, it is not always practical to carry around three liters, so there are also durable water bottles. Today we want to introduce you to the ones from Nalgene.
Why do I need a water bottle if I already have a three-liter drinking backpack? Good question!
One should have the appropriate equipment for every situation, 3 liters or 3 kg may be advantageous in a battle in Afghanistan, which can sometimes last for several hours. However, it is highly doubtful that the average person would have such a problem. That's why there are also one to two-liter bottles. Nalgene offers many shapes and colors with different closures. However, one bottle that is very popular is the "Everyday 1 L." Here in the photos, not brand new anymore (parts of the logos have already come off), but fortunately that is only incidental. The bottle has a scale on the back that shows the current measurement from 0000ml to 1000ml.
The drinking spout is narrow (29 mm) so you don't spill anything while drinking. Alternatively, there is the same bottle with a wide drinking spout to spoon soups, for example. Cold and hot drinks like tea are no problem for the bottle, but it is not a thermos. In other words, you should consume the hot drink quickly.
The bottle itself is made of BPA-free plastic. BPA, or Bisphenol A, is allegedly harmful to genes, causes diabetes, and disrupts reproduction. However, this has been scientifically refuted, as the amount that would be ingested through such bottles is a fraction of the maximum limit and therefore safe for humans. Nevertheless, all Nalgene bottles are made of BPA-free plastic.
In terms of quality, you can only say "top." Thick, robust plastic, hot and cold drinks are no problem, and so far there have been no nasty surprises in terms of leaking, the closure (upper left) holds. No plastic taste, which was the most important criterion for me. Anyone who has undergone basic training can surely remember the standard aluminum mugs of the Bundeswehr, which often had a bland taste and an unpleasant smell. With Nalgene, none of this is a problem...
CONCLUSION: Especially during sports or small physical activities, a liter of water is always advisable. You cannot go wrong with this easy-to-grip bottle. If you have the 8€ to spare, don't be stingy.
You can get the Nalgene Everyday 1L on Amazon in different models between 8 and
13 euros. If you prefer a wide opening: the MAXpedition Nalgene Bottle is available at Sierra13 for 14.90 euros. Maxpedition offers MOLLE pouches specially for 1-liter bottles like the Nalgene.
P.S.: Drink at least 3 liters of water a day. 😉
