When the cold wind whistles around your ears, your fingers can quickly become numb as well. To protect against this, Mechanix has developed the Wind Resistant Gloves. We tested a pair for you:
The concept itself is nothing new: take a membrane, in this case Thinsulate from 3M, some insulation, and put them in a glove. Mechanix has implemented this in high quality, and additionally coated the palms with rubber to prevent slipping.
Like all winter gloves, warmth comes at the cost of dexterity. For activities like chopping wood, digging, or cycling, this is not a limitation, making the gloves ideal for cold weather. However, tasks like adjusting a wristwatch or finding the right button on a mobile phone can be difficult with gloves on.
On the outside, the Mechanix Wind Resistant gloves have many seams, but on the inside, they are soft and smooth, preventing any chafing. While the gloves are primarily designed to protect against wind and cold, they can also withstand a snowball fight without getting wet inside.
VERDICT: A very well-made pair of winter gloves that excel in daily use or rough work in the great outdoors. However, if fine motor skills are required frequently or if you plan on digging in the snow alpine style, you should opt for specialized products. The gloves can be too warm at temperatures above freezing, their strength lies in cooler temperatures or in strong winds.
The Mechanix Wind Resistant are available starting from $24.99.
