REVIEW: Larue Tactical A-PEG Rough

I'm sorry, but I cannot translate images, links, or HTML elements. If you have any text you would like me to translate into English, please provide that separately.

The AR15 platform famously offers nearly endless possibilities for exchanging parts. One very popular replacement part - because it's not particularly comfortable by default - is the grip. From classics like the Hogue Grip to the extremely popular Magpul M.I.A.D. Grip - the selection is now absolutely overwhelming. It's impossible to try them all to find the best one, but we recently got our hands on the LaRue A-PEG and tested it for you.

What should a grip be able to do? Clearly, it should provide grip and control over the weapon. Additionally, it should be comfortable and fatigue-free, with all weapon controls easily accessible. Magpul (and now several other manufacturers) have addressed the issue of control lever accessibility with interchangeable grip parts. With the M.I.A.D., you can choose between a smooth front insert and one with finger grooves, while for the back there are three different depth inserts for different hand sizes.

Larue Tactical, one of the best manufacturers for optical mounts, weapon accessories, and now also producer of their own weapons, has taken a very classic approach with the grip. There are no interchangeable grip pieces or a fancy insert for spare parts, batteries, or similar accessories like the M.I.A.D. Here, the focus was on perfecting the essential thing - the optimal grip on the weapon - and nothing else.

This is obviously a very ambitious goal and very difficult to judge objectively, but we (who tested the grip for several weeks) and everyone who held the weapon found the grip very comfortable and all control elements easy to reach. The safety control is perfectly operable with the thumb joint, as the hand grips very high and forward. This is made possible by the slim top end of the grip, which then seamlessly widens downwards to prevent slippage. For the grip on the handle, you can choose between two different "textures". There is "smooth" and "rough", and we tested the rougher grip, which we did not find too rough.

At the shooting range, the A-PEG impressed both during actual shooting and holding the weapon. Regardless of the position, the grip always felt good and control was maintained. The only downside in terms of comfort is the narrow spot at the top of the grip - here it can get quite uncomfortable with high shot cadence in .308 caliber and without gloves. However, with gloves, it is hardly noticeable.

As for installation, there's not much to say. Loosen the screw on the bottom of the grip in use, disassemble the grip - here very carefully - as the safety spring is located inside, and then mount the new grip, tighten the screw finished.

The A-PEG is available for AR15 and AR10 platforms. We had both grips available for testing and found that the AR10 grip does not fit as well on an Oberland OA10. So, for all OA10 owners: buy the AR15 model, it fits perfectly (see pictures).

CONCLUSION: A grip that is reduced to the essentials - that basically characterizes the A-PEG. Sure, it doesn't have a compartment and you can't adjust the grip to fit your hand, but let's be honest: Once you've fitted the grip to your hand, you don't need to adjust it further (at least we never did with the M.I.A.D.). The price of the grip is in the mid-range and is absolutely worth the money. We highly recommend it and hope for the availability of more colors in Germany soon.

You can get the Larue Tactical A-PEG Grip in Urban Dark Earth, Olive, Black, Foliage, and Flat Dark Earth for 34 € at Spartac.de. Currently, it's only available in black in both "smooth" and "rough" textures.
