Weapon lights bring light to the darkness. But there are only a few that can simultaneously emit infrared light. That's exactly what the INFORCE WMLx gen2 WHITE/IR does, as the name confirms. We'll tell you what to expect from the INFORCE WMLx.
INFORCE has been on the market for quite some time now and they have established themselves with their simply good weapon lights. Recently, the Thuringian police opted for this lamp - in the white light-only version - on their new "medium distance weapon" from FN Herstal. HERE are all the details about the police rifle from Thuringia.
The WMLx is the larger of the two rifle lights from INFORCE. It delivers 700 lumens of white light with up to 6,000 candela and 400 mW of IR light.
The WMLx is powered by 2 CR123A batteries. Unfortunately, an 18650 battery does not fit.
The operation is simple and well thought out. The pressure switch is installed at the rear end. This is best operated with the thumb. Press and hold to activate the light, and as soon as you release your thumb, it goes out. This is the momentary mode.
If you press the switch briefly, the light turns on and stays on. This is the constant mode.
A quick double-click activates the strobe mode.
At the end of the weapon light, the shooter will find a small bar that can be flipped up. This is a kind of switch safety that is designed to prevent accidental triggering. It works. However, those with slim fingers could still activate the light despite this safety feature, but in a very cumbersome way.
There is no cable switch provided for the light. The ergonomics are designed to be mounted securely on the top rail. This may not be possible on all weapon models, but a side mount works just as well.
On the side, you will find the clamp mount. This can be operated completely without tools. First, loosen the locking screw, open the clamp, and place it on a Picatinny rail. Then simply tighten the locking screw and the WMLx is mounted and secure.
On the other side, there is a small lever. This switches between white and IR light.
The front view of the light also shows the position of the IR LEDs. Four pieces are mounted around the white light LED. Unfortunately, this is not the optimal positioning, as the IR light is not well focused through the reflector.
Anyone expecting a similar light beam from the WMLx IR as from a Laser Illuminator, such as the laserbox on guns, is mistaken. It is a flashlight and not a lighting laser. But the WMLx does not claim to be a laser.
In use, the white light works very well. It provides a well-focused beam with a very usable range. In the forest itself, like with any lamp, there is the problem of self-glare, but the white light beam reaches deeper into wooded areas.
Now to the IR light. The lack of focus becomes quickly noticeable here. The IR light is very bright and radiates at an angle of about 50 to 60°, but after 20 meters, the beam is already so unfocused that the illumination of the front area darkens everything behind it.
For comparison, we brought along our PERST 3 Laser. The round bright circle is the Laser Illuminator of the PERST 3 Laserbox. Since it is used for longer distances, the beam must be focused so that enough light reaches the target. The area in front is illuminated by the INFORCE WMLx.
The INFORCE WMLx IR illuminates the entire surrounding area rather evenly, while a Laser Illuminator really only illuminates a point.
However, this does not mean that the WMLx IR is useless, quite the opposite. At short distances or indoors, the brightness of the IR light is perfect. The illumination is better visible in our video.
The wavelength of the IR light is not specified by the manufacturer, but it is around 850 nm, as it is very easily perceptible with the naked eye. When you look at it, it appears as a dark red color, similar to what you see from various surveillance cameras.
Especially as a helmet light, the WMLx and here even more so its little brother, the WML, perform very well. If you attach it to a swiveling mount and turn it upwards in a room, you can perfectly illuminate a dark space. Both with white light and IR light. This is called Umbrella Lighting and is commonly used, as it provides bright light without blinding anyone, like a kind of ceiling floodlight.
CONCLUSION: Overall, the INFORCE WMLx IR is an impeccable weapon light when it comes to white light. For the IR light, we would like to see more focus, but it is still a usable light source for night vision devices. If you are looking for a solid weapon light that also offers IR, you can't go wrong with the WMLx IR.
The INFORCE WILD 1 is available at ARMAMAT from 256.90 Euros in Black and FDE.
