Gaiters are not only practical in winter, but also very popular in muddy or swampy areas. Helikon-Tex has recognized the usefulness of gaiters and has now brought their own to the market. To suit the weather, we tested them and will tell you today how the Long Gaiters fare.
Here they are in all their full greenzone glory. The gaiters are mostly made of Cordura, which we couldn't confirm exactly, but we suspect it’s 500D Cordura.
The Long Gaiters are opened and closed using a classic 5cm wide Velcro strip on the front.
Inside, there is mesh material for padding. The foot loop, designed to prevent slipping, is made of Hypalon, which is almost indestructible. At least that's what the manufacturers of Hypalon say, we are curious to see how long it lasts.
The Hypalon foot loop can be adjusted very well thanks to the double-sided Velcro. A really nice, solid solution that we haven’t seen in many gaiters before.
Breathable Versastretch material is sewn at the back of the gaiter. This prevents excessive heat buildup and ensures a good fit around the calf.
As it should be, the Long Gaitors also have a lace hook. This ensures that the gaiter stays in place.
At the top, there is a 20mm elastic band with a plastic G-hook to prevent snow from entering. If you're wondering why the pants look so pale: it's Pencott Wildwood, the lighter sibling of Pencott Greenzone, designed exclusively for Helikon-Tex.
Here again are the Long Gaitors in all their glory on the leg. As you can see, Greenzone matches Wildwood very well, or is hardly distinguishable at first glance.
CONCLUSION: These gaiters are suitable for more than just snow and are very durable. Thanks to Cordura, they can easily resist close-to-ground thorny plants, and the Versastretch material on the back provides some ventilation. Otherwise, a very classic gaiter design with good materials chosen. Bring on the next muddy terrain!
Available directly from Helikon-Tex for €32.90 ex. shipping in Pencott Greenzone and Snowdrift, Black and Coyote, and at all retailers carrying Helikon-Tex such as Camostore or TacOpsGear.
