While it is often overused: sometimes less is more. Following this motto, First Spear developed The Slick ultralight plate carrier for concealed operations. We took a closer look at it:
The carrier consists of two elastic plate carrier pockets connected by straps. The Slick is available in a Swimmer Cut and in a SAPI variant (in various sizes), we tested the SAPI Medium. Since the material is stretchy, it can accommodate differently shaped plates (such as SK4, as available from Best Protection). A lightweight mesh material is used on the inside, with no padding (see bottom).
The Slick has a wide elastic band around the torso that is velcroed on the front. It is fixed sewn at the back, so it cannot be adjusted here. While this saves weight, it makes the plate carrier unsuitable for individuals with a body shape outside the norm. However, it fits me well, pressing the plates firmly against the chest and back. The width of the stretch bands is comfortable, they do not cut in and allow for easy deep breathing.
The shoulder straps are made of the same lightly stretchable material as the outside of the plate pockets and simply velcroed together. This may not inspire the most confidence, but so far, there have been no problems with the two plates weighing three kilos each. It is very positive that the shoulder straps are not too long, allowing the plates to be positioned high.
CONCLUSION: The Slick is a niche product for individuals who wear ballistic plates (stand alone) under clothing. For these purposes, the carrier is great because it is extremely light and fits snugly against the body. However, compromises must be made in terms of durability or abrasion resistance, so it is recommended not to wear it as the outermost layer. But for discreet protection, it is excellent!
