A bag for everything? At least for almost everything - that's what the First Spear Multi Mag Rapid-Adjust Pouch offers you. The dream behind it: never buy another bag again. Fully multi-caliber. We took a closer look at it for you.
Everyone knows the HSGI TACO bag: Popular, practical, universal, inexpensive and copied thousands of times by almost every manufacturer producing tactical nylon products. First Spear wanted to take a different path with their own Multi Magazine Pouch, and they managed to do so with a completely new system.
So the Multi Mag Rapid-Adjust Pouch is a multi-magazine pouch like the TACO. OK, no excitement from us at first. However, besides magazines, the bag can also hold pistol magazines, radios, or other items. Yeah ... now our interest is piqued.
How does it work? The magazine pouch operates with the BOA lacing system, which is normally found in the sports sector in shoes. Here is a short video from the manufacturer:
So the Rapid-Adjust Pouch has a knob on the bottom of the magazine pouch…
... which, by turning, tightens the drawstrings on the back of the bag ...
... and thereby tightens the bag around the inserted object/magazine.
At first, this works very well, no matter what you feed into the Multi Mag Pouch: AR15, AR10, AK, G36, or AUG - every magazine we inserted can be secured with it. However, the bag is either so tight around the magazine that it cannot be pulled out or so loose that the magazine falls out.
Furthermore, there is a difficulty in reinserting magazines - the bag is too soft for this, leading to unwanted and time-consuming issues. The best method we found to work with the bags is as follows:
All very cumbersome. We prefer the removal and filling of TACO-style bags, but we don't jump out of airplanes with them or do any other extraordinary things. Therefore, these bags may have their justification.
There is also additional accessory available that must be purchased separately. For the AR15 platform, there is a plastic insert that gives the bag more rigidity and is intended to simplify magazine removal and filling.
The insert is adjustable with an included Velcro strip to set the depth of the magazine. The issue with this insert, however, is that an AR15 PMAG from Magpul sits so tightly from the nose onward that it cannot be removed without hitting the plate carrier against your chin. We would have preferred a simple solution like the Haley Strategic Inserts.
It's a different story for the inserts available for pistol magazines.
You can adjust these with the Velcro strip so that the magazines have good resistance. Also available as an option in a pack of two.
In use, we can imagine a conceivable scenario where an operator switches between AR15/AR10 to a 9mm SMG and only needs to use the pistol inserts on the plate carrier to switch from three AR15/AR10 magazines to six SMG magazines. The use for radios, smokes, flashbangs, or similar items is quickly realized with the bags, so they also get points from us.
By the way, the bags can also be secured classically with a bungee cord, also available separately.
The bag is attached using the 6/12 MOLLE loops from First Spear, with long tabs at the end to prevent unintentional loosening of the bag.
Manufactured in the USA, material 500D Nylon.
CONCLUSION: Those who can foresee what they want to pack in their magazine pouches (known weapon platform) and do not change it significantly, or have common platforms to choose from, will continue to do well with TACO-Style bags. For others looking for something special or wanting to securely store radios or other items in ONE bag, they should check out the First Spear Multi Mag Rapid-Adjust Pouch.
What's especially striking, however, is the price: you can get the bags for €71.90 each. The AR15 insert costs €11.90, the pistol package €13.90, and we don't know the cost of the bungees.
