The important question of how to get your magazines into the kangaroo pouch of a plate carrier has been occupying humanity since plate carriers were invented with a front pocket. Ferro Concepts from Canada has now created a supply option that works damn well, a Kydex Triple Shingle (KTS) for M4 magazines. We at SPARTANAT have tested it for you.
The basic functionality is best explained in the side view: On the right, you can see the empty KTS, and on the left, a magazine is standing inside. The body of the shingle is made of Kydex, a material that is becoming very popular (especially for holsters). If you stick your fingers on the right, it hurts quite a bit, as the pressure is tight at the point where the upper and lower Kydex wings touch.
The mouth of the KTS is lined with Velcro for attachment and inside it is trimmed with normal fabric tape.
From the bottom side, you can see the rubber strap, which presses the three individual Kydex clips firmly into the fabric enclosure. Because the Kydex parts are separate, the triple shingle remains nicely flexible.
Normally, the Ferro Concepts M4 Kydex Triple Shingle is placed in a Ferro Concepts Plate Carrier (FCPC). The KTS is suitable not only for the FCPC, but also for a classic 6094. Or simply for any kangaroo pocket on a plate carrier with a 10-inch (25.4 cm) slot.
The KTS in the FCPC is barely visible, but is the ideal magazine holder.
CONCLUSION: Ferro Concepts has ingeniously invented a really good piece here. The magazines can be quickly inserted, but they hold tightly. At the same time, the KTS is not stiff in the pouch, but flexible. Thanks to the Kydex, the mouth is always open and waiting for feed. No more frustrating fumbling like with traditional fabric inserts for the kangaroo pouch on the plate carrier.
The M4 Kydex Triple Shingle is available directly from Ferro Concepts for $60 (excluding shipping).
