The Surefire M961 – shown in the picture – is already a classic tactical weapon light, unfortunately quite expensive in its original form. Fortunately, (NEW) Element has made a copy of it. Read here at SPARTANAT to find out more about the function and quality of this replica.
It is quickly noticeable that the Element M961 is very well-made, even copying the Surefire logo. One difference from the original is that the Element version, called EX109, is powered by a CREE Q2 LED. Another difference is the color: the original is more gray, while Element presents it in black.
The flashlight essentially consists of five parts, six if you include the cable switch. The switch part and the middle part with rail mount are identical to the M951, but more details on that will be in a separate review. The cable switch is screwed onto the flashlight and holds securely. All screw connections are also equipped with at least one O-ring.
Now onto the function: It is very simple. The light can be turned on either by the included cable switch or the pressure switch. The pressure switch locks into place after pressing it, putting the light in "Steady On" mode. Pressing it again turns it off.
For operation, 3 CR123A batteries are needed, but it also works perfectly with just two. You just need to create a conductive spacer to make up for the missing battery. We used an old screw and a lot of tape for this. There is no noticeable difference in brightness.
The light is very bright, as mentioned before. The picture was taken from a distance of 1.5m and the diameter of the center is approximately ~20cm. It can definitely be compared to the M3X.
CONCLUSION: Overall, a really great product that comes highly recommended. Those who like the Old School Look – which is still very popular – will be satisfied with this affordable option. It is bright, sturdy, and reliable. In short, Element has made us happy.
The M961 is available at RSOV for $43.99 excluding shipping.
