REVIEW: Direct Action Thunderbolt Compact Chest Rig

01/17/2019By Redaktion

Size doesn't matter, some say. Well, the trend is towards smaller: Micro Rigs are modern, many manufacturers are competing. It all started with the D3CR by Haley Strategic, and then came the Micro Fight Rig by Spiritus Systems. The answer from Poland: the Thunderbolt Compact Chest Rig by Direct Action. We took a closer look at it for you.

Here is the Thunderbolt on the man. There is no official classification for small rigs, but Micro usually means three cells for magazines, some are also modular so that magazines for rifles in .308 and 9mm submachine guns also fit. Direct Action opts for four magazine cells and calls the Thunderbolt "Compact". It is compact - especially when compared to the full-fledged Hurricane Chest Rig by Direct Action that we have already introduced (see front link).

The back row holds four AR15 magazines, AK also fits, as well as SR, G36 Pmag and G36 (cleaned). Attached in front are fixed pockets. There are multipurpose compartments with flaps on the right and left - a vertical zippered pocket and two small pockets in the center.

Paracord with stitched pull tabs ensures a secure fit for the magazines and is easy to operate. The clip for the harness is exposed. The material used is a laminated 500D Cordura, shaped with laser cut.

Of course, the space behind the panel is also utilized, where the top Velcro strip can be opened to reveal an admin compartment for maps or similar items.

In the pocket on the left, another magazine fits. The second pocket from the left is the one with the zipper. Here, we use it as storage for a tourniquet. A flashbang also fits. Inside there is also a small pull tab, where a lanyard can be attached.

A classic idea with small rigs is to have two small compartments in the center. Here, we use them for a multitool and flashlight, but of course, two pistol magazines also fit inside.

On the right side is another multipurpose compartment, here with a flap that can be triggered. Then there is a deep compartment that the shooter can quickly access. (Triggering the flap also works on the left side.) Or it can be used, for example, as a secured radio compartment.

As usual with Direct Action: these people have thought ahead. Straps can be neatly secured with Velcro.

At the lower edge of the Thunderbolt, there is a strip with laser-cut strips, where a waist bag can be attached or even a tourniquet.

Bottom view of the entire Chest Rig: All magazine compartments can be adjusted in terms of strength. There is a drainage loop in the zipper pouch. Along the entire bottom, MOLLE strips are cut, which also serve as drainage openings for the four magazine compartments. The wearer can of course also attach pockets here - for example, two pistol magazine pockets, then one could store multitool and flashlight there, while using the small front compartments for pistol magazines. As small as the rig may be, there is a lot of room for customization.

Side view, here with magazines in the rig. You can see the tension of the magazine compartments and how the straps run. Rear view, a classic H-harness.

The straps are also laser-cut and simpler compared to the larger Hurricane. However, MOLLE loops and slots are enough to attach equipment if needed.

The crossbar on the back also has MOLLE. You'll surely think of something you want to bring with you: fixing a radio on your back or attaching a hydration bladder are two options.

Another flexible stretching in the stomach belt. This is good for when rapid breathing occurs. The rig from the back. The gray material is softshell-like and comfortable to wear.

Last time we had the question of what the stretch at the corners is for: so that the clips can be supplied when the harness goes down. The rig can not only be used as a chest rig, but can be integrated as a belly load in a plate carrier. With Direct Action you simply think of everything: HERE is the current Direct Action catalog.

CONCLUSION: Micro rigs should always be very small and carry the essentials. With many manufacturers you can see how they expand the rig until it is almost large again. Direct Action takes a different approach with its compact solution. The Thunderbolt is a full-fledged chest rig that can be loaded with up to six rifle magazines. That's an impressive number. And yet the thing is so small and compact that you could theoretically put it under the car seat. The possibilities to load it according to personal needs are also diverse: purely as a magazine carrier for the range, very sporty, or as a small survival package for emergencies. Of the micro chest rigs, of which we will introduce more soon, this is the most convincing model so far. And of course, beautifully made, at a price that is reasonable.

The Direct Action Thunderbolt Compact Chest Rig is available at S4 SUPPLIES and all dealers who carry DA, around 179 euros.
