My Journey

Here is a picture of mountain the beautiful mountain I climbed last summer.

Check out my latest blog post to read about my travel adventures.

How is a custom AR15 created by an expert? Horner Arms from Heubach, led by Matthias Horner, specializes in building such weapons themselves and importing coveted parts from the United States. Today we bring you the second part - HERE is the first part to read - providing insight into the assembly and construction of an AR15 - from A for trigger to Z for feeder. To complete the Lowers, the Upper is required. The upper part of the AR15 housing includes the following components:

  • UpperForward Assist

The Forward Assist is used in case of malfunctions to manually feed the cartridge by pressing a button. The Forward Assist consists of a spring, a pawl with a related pin and spring, and the button. The entire system is held by the Forward Assist Pin on the lower housing. Standard MilSpec parts were used.

  • Ejection Port Cover

This is the protective cover in front of the lock that automatically opens when chambering a round, ensuring the ejection of the casings. The cover consists of the actual cover, a spring, a retaining ring, and the long pin on which the cover is mounted. Once again, standard MilSpec parts are in use.

  • Costum AR15 Build 18Charging Handle

The Charging Handle operates the bolt. When a magazine is inserted, the handle must be pulled back and released to make the weapon ready to fire. To keep the bolt locked back, the bolt catch must be pressed when operating the charging handle. The Charging Handle consists of the handle itself and the unlocking unit, held by a spring with a pin. By default, unlocking can only be done from the left side. We have installed an AXTS Ambidextrous Raptor Charging Handle that allows for ambidextrous operation.

  • Costum AR15 Build 17Bolt Carrier Group

The heart of the AR is the Bolt Carrier Group. At first glance, you only see the carrier, from which the actual bolt with the typical cam head protrudes. The bolt itself consists of the extractor, which is moved by a pin and spring, the extractor pin, ejector roll pin, ejector spring and ejector, and 3 gas rings seated towards the rear area. The firing pin goes through the bolt, which is held by the CAM pin and the firing pin retaining pin on the carrier. At the top of the carrier sits the Bolt Carrier Key, which is fastened to the carrier with 2 screws. The key later accommodates the gas tube and introduces gas into the bolt.

BCGITS Tactical has nicely explained the components and the assembly HERE.

This AR introduced here uses a Fail Zero Bolt Carrier Group, which is very low maintenance and lightweight due to its Nickel Boron coating.

Except for the bolt, all components presented here are freely available in Germany.

Costum AR15 Build 7The upper is now equipped, all that is missing is everything in front of the upper: the barrel and its components.

Costum AR15 Build 16The barrel is a Lothar Walther barrel with a 1/8 twist, in the legally permitted length of 16.75" for sports shooters in Germany, and a 1/2×28 thread. The barrel is inserted into the upper and secured with the barrel nut. It is free-floating, meaning it is only connected to the upper and nowhere else. The choice of a 1/8 twist allows for a wide range of bullet weights - from 55 grain to 77 grain - without sacrificing proper bullet stabilization.

Costum AR15 Build 6At the end of the barrel is the gas block, which directs the gases exiting the barrel back to the bolt via the gas tube.

Costum AR15 Build 9For better shooting performance and muzzle flash suppression, a combination of flash hider and compensator is used. Pictured here is an SLR Rifleworks Synergy S Comp.

Costum AR15 Build 21The barrel, as a regulated part in Germany, must be marked (engraved). This is done during the construction and purchase at Horner Arms.

Costum AR15 Build 8To mount accessories, protect the barrel, and provide a grip, a handguard is used. Like all AR parts, there is an endless selection of manufacturers, shapes, and now even profiles. Whereas the tactical sector used to be dominated by a Quad Rail (Picatinny rails on all four sides of the handguard), nowadays we see more handguards using the Keymod or M-LOK system. Both systems have holes instead of the Picatinny profile, allowing for specially designed products to be attached. This results in a slimmer and lighter system. Additionally, Keymod or M-LOK Picatinny adapters can be used to remain compatible with older components.
