Camouflage has always been an important part of hunting or combat. If you secure the crucial advantage of not being detected late, the chances of success increase dramatically. In the military, soldiers have camouflage suits. However, normal camouflage suits are always two-dimensional, meaning that the suit camouflages (regardless of the pattern), but does not hide the human silhouette. That is why snipers always use three-dimensional camouflage - a so-called "ghillie".
A camouflage suit or cloak on a net, into which threads, fabrics, and natural camouflage from the surroundings are woven. The ghillie is indispensable in this area, but it is usually very heavy and absolutely unusable for normal combat. This is where the Crye Precision Compact Assault Ghillie comes into play, which Martin has taken a look at for you. The idea was to create three-dimensional camouflage for the operator that is lightweight, blurs the silhouette, and does not or hardly hinders quick interventions.
The name says it all:
Compact it is, packed in a convenient bag with straps, it is hardly larger than a tennis ball and weighs only 146g with the bag!
The material of the ghillie is very fine and thin, naturally - when it comes from Crye - in Multicam. Part of the camouflage material is underlaid with mesh where it comes into contact with the body.
The ghillie actually consists of 2 parts - a top that consists of connected sleeves and a hood, and a detachable, two-layered waist-length cloak.
It is also very nice to see here how full access to a chest rig is ensured by the cut - the mesh sleeves leave the underside of the upper arm free and only fully enclose the arm at the elbow.
The ghillie is closed on the chest with 2 ITW TAC Toggles. There is also an elastic for adjusting the hood.
The cloak does not have a mesh lining and consists of 2 layers of material. This has the advantage of a denser camouflage effect and the upper layer can be folded forward to camouflage the rifle, for example.
However, it should be noted that in such an application, the unprinted side of the camouflage net is on the outside, so the camouflage appears somewhat paler. The cloak is attached with traditional BDU buttons on the main part.
Here is another picture without the cloak, backpacks - no matter what size - are not a problem.
Finally, some pictures to show the camouflage effect.
CONCLUSION: The Crye Ghillie is an exceptional piece of gear - excellent in weight and the function is not to be underestimated. Unfortunately, the fine laser-cut camouflage material is also very fragile, during tests in the forest, the cloak unfortunately tore in the middle quite quickly. It could be repaired with a needle and thread, but that is already a clear disadvantage - compromises have to be made somewhere at this weight. At the same time, this is not a full-fledged ghillie that is painstakingly constructed. But that is also the advantage. It is an additional camouflage in Multicam that can be quickly and efficiently thrown over, blurring the contours and giving the shooter a tactical advantage.
The Crye Ghillie is available at TACWRK or at LEAF Gear.
