REVIEW: Crye Gen. 2 Pant vs. Oberland vs. TMC

05/07/2014By Redaktion

Either you have the original - or you don't. There are many replicas of the Crye Precision AC (aka. Gen2) outfit. Since China or even Pakistan always struggled to match the colors correctly, we have made a small comparison below between the original and two replicas (from left to right): TMC CP Gen2 style Combat Pants by EB versus Oberland Gear Heavy Duty Pants versus Crye Precision AC Combat Pants.

It should be noted that the CP is already significantly faded. The Oberland Gear (OG) fits very well compared to other new original MC gear and the TMC has the color problems known from China, which you can see here. It is just "too green" and too strong. For actors, not only the shade of Multicam itself is decisive, but especially for the AC variant, the color and material of the stretch are important. In the header image above, all three pants are next to each other, from left to right: TMC, OG, CP:

As seen here, the original on the far right has a very light tone with a yellowish hue. The two clones are much darker and visibly transition into a brown tone. The TMC stretch is very dark, shiny, and smooth, very similar to satin. The stretch of the OG is very rough and coarse, noticeably more open-meshed than the original. A bit like elastic bandage material. Here is another photo without sunlight, taken indoors:

Crye OG TMC_3A special feature of the Oberland Gear is the pads. On the one hand, the fakes are not compared here because there is no CP model, on the other hand, the pockets for the pads are about 2-3cm shorter and the cut-out has a different shape. In contrast to the original, the cut-out does not have a trapezoid shape, but has one more corner on each side:

Crye OG TMC_5Also of interest to many is the size. Therefore, the comparison is as follows: TMC M, OG M-Reg (as indicated on the tag, there are actually no Short or Long sizes) and CP 34R.

The TMC is listed on EB as fitting 32"-34", which is 81.2-86.4 cm. However, it can be adjusted from 79-90cm in hip circumference. The inseam length is 74cm in the widest setting.

Oberland lists the pants with a hip circumference of 31"-35" on the tag, which is 78.7-88.9 cm. In reality, it's more like 88-95cm. (It is also mentioned on the website that the pants run slightly larger.) The inseam is listed on the tag as 29.5"-32.5", which is 47.9-82.5 cm. In actual measurements, it's about 83cm in the longest setting.

Crye actually matches its stated measurements. 34-37", which is 86.36-93.98cm. In measurements, it's 86-94cm. For length, CP lists 29.5-32.5", which is 75-82.5 cm, and in the longest setting, it's just under 83cm.

Here is the table:

Finally, a small note: The Oberland Gear pants lose color in the stretch material relatively quickly when washed.
They significantly lighten. The "brownish hue" is still visible, and CP remains simply more yellow, but it does "fade". I have been able to inspect several examples of this at some games. Here is a small picture of a friend:
