It is widely known that the Steyr AUG has not undergone much external modification since 1977. It always looks the same. A modernization from Steyr-Mannlicher was the A3 SF variant – HERE is a link to it – with a lower sight device with rails attached, which was first received by the Jagdkommando. They put Aimpoints on it for close combat. Unfortunately, this upper is not available as a retrofit kit for the A1 and A2 variants. Too bad, as rails are always practical and appreciated. This is where Clawgear comes in and provides a practical upgrade for the good, classic Steyr AUG, the AUG Modular Scope Cover. This accessory is delivered in an environmentally friendly cardboard packaging. Inside, you will find the mounting and operating instructions…
… the two-piece Scope Cover, two protective caps, five screws (including matching nuts), and an Allen key. So you can unpack it - and get started right away. The cover for the A1 optics is made of glass fiber-reinforced polymer, making it lightweight and very stable.
By default, only a Picantinny rail is integrated on the top. If you want more rails on the sides, you can have them. Even in two lengths: the AUG MSM 10 and AUG MSM 4 Slot Rails. These are made of the best aluminum in Austria.
The MSM rails must be mounted on the housing before installing the Scope Cover. The assembly is very simple. Simply position the included nuts in the designated places inside the cover, …
… and position the rail on the outside, then tighten it with the appropriate Allen screws provided. Done.
Now the Scope Cover is also ready for installation. First, attach the smaller half of the cover to the optics. Then snap on the other half. It's still halfway there: and thankfully, you can see the original optics and the new "cover", which is actually a housing, in comparison of dimensions.
Now the AUG Modular Scope Cover is actually already secure, but since weapons are known to have recoil, the cover is further secured with the five Allen screws. A small drop of threadlocker is recommended, as well as on the screws of the AUG MSM rails.
CONCLUSION: Clawgear offers a simple Drop In solution with the AUG Modular Scope Cover for those who want to protect their AUG optics, and/or attach additional red dot sights or lights (where legally allowed for civilians) to their AUG A1 or A2.
In our tests, the cover has proven to be very reliable and a useful addition. The sight line with a mounted red dot sight is very high, higher than that of the A3 SF as well. Of course, you can also mount it just for the A3 SF look. For the Austrian Armed Forces, this part would also be a very practical upgrade for old weapons.
Available, for example, directly from Clawgear for €129.90 excluding shipping. The AUG MSM 10 and AUG MSM 4 Slot Rails are also available there for €26.90 and €16.90 respectively.
