REVIEW: Beyond Clothing PCU - Level 1a and 1b

The American special forces' PCU system consists of seven layers, including Level 1 for underwear by Beyond Clothing. Level 1a is for warmer temps with silk boxers, while 1b is for colder temperatures with long sleeves and pants. The materials are high-quality and functional, making it a great option for all temperatures. Beyond Clothing offers M1A and M1B at reasonable prices.

The PCU system worn by American special forces consists of seven layers. We have already introduced you to the old system (all seven levels here on SPARTANAT in the review). It has been replaced by a new system - made by Beyond Clothing. Martin also introduces it in his layers. We start at the beginning and with the underwear: The first layer is worn directly on the body and is referred to as Level 1. Level 1 is divided into a) and b), with 1a intended for warmer temperatures and 1b for colder temperatures.

PCU Level 1a_1Level 1a consists of a T-shirt and silk boxers. Silk is ideal to wear on the body, as it feels very soft and cools in heat and warms in cold.

PCU Level 1a_2It is also elastic and absorbs moisture very quickly. So, after sweating, you have a dry shirt again fairly quickly.

PCU Level 1a_4Alternatively, you can also choose a long-sleeved shirt for 1a.

PCU Level 1b_1Level 1b only comes with long sleeves and the pants are also long. The material used is a thin Polartec® PowerDry® Jersey, which also feels very good on the skin and is elastic.

PCU Level 1b_2The top has a 1/4 zipper and a short collar to warm the neck as well. All seams are positioned so that they do not bother or rub when wearing a backpack or other items.

PCU Level 1b_4The pants have an elastic waistband with a fly.

PCU Level 1b_3Level 1b can be worn excellently under Level 5 when being physically active. If you're more prone to feeling cold, or if the temperatures are well below freezing, you can add another layer of Level 2 and you're done.

CONCLUSION: Beyond has succeeded in implementing the first layer with excellent materials. By dividing it into 1a and 1b, there is something for every temperature and sensitivity to cold. Here you definitely have functional underwear of very good quality and if you're lucky, you can get it at a good price - they do occasionally appear on eBay.

You can get Level 1a and 1b at Beyond Clothing regularly. They are called M1A and M1B here and cost between $39 and $59 per piece.
