Cargo pants - or also known as tactical pants - are now absolutely socially acceptable, comfortable, and extremely practical. Brands like Propper, True Spec, and others have been making them for a long time, while 5.11 and Blackhawk have recognized and perfected the niche for the police and security sector. This year, Arc’teryx LEAF is also introducing a LowVis (Concealed Carry / Low Visibility) pant in their lineup: the xFunctional Pant AR - we have tested them.

Compared to Blackhawk or 5.11, the xFunctional Pant is very casual and more baggy in cut. The legs are straight and do not have the typical "carrot cut" often found in cargo pants. The material used is the typical Arc'teryx 50/50 mix - 50% cotton and 50% nylon. The pant is especially comfortable to wear in warmer weather and dries quickly if it gets wet. The xFunctional also ventures into new color choices: Terra (sand-colored) and the Greenstone (olive/ranger green) as presented here. Both colors have a slight canvas look and are reminiscent of Tad Gear. The Greenstone shade is slightly lighter than Ranger Green (see comparison image below of the Arc'teryx Assault AR Pant in Ranger Green) and olive.

The xFunctional Pant, like many products from Arc’teryx LEAF, is manufactured in the Far East.

Arc'teryx LEAF xFunctional Pant AR 8Along with the comfortable, loose fit, there are two other details that give the pants a unique feeling: first, the velvety sweatband at the waist (top), which provides very good comfort by preventing friction, and secondly, the pre-shaped knee areas (bottom) that guarantee absolute freedom of movement. There are no pockets for pads.

Arc'teryx LEAF xFunctional Pant AR 9The pocket configuration is also impressive; the Arc’teryx LEAF website lists 10 pockets, but in actuality, there are twelve:

2 back pockets

2 high-waisted front pockets

2 knife pockets (behind the high-waisted front pockets)

2 low front pockets

Arc'teryx LEAF xFunctional Pant AR 52 internal pockets (sized like a Zippo - integrated into the low front pocket)

2 thigh pockets for magazine-shaped items

Arc'teryx LEAF xFunctional Pant AR 6All pockets are easily accessible, the deep front pockets practically invite you to wander your hands in them. The magazine pockets are perfectly positioned, allowing for quick reloading and easy insertion of magazines, thanks to the reinforcement at the top of the pockets.

Arc'teryx LEAF xFunctional Pant AR 1Another feature is the belt loops. They are large enough to comfortably thread a riggers belt with a Cobra buckle through without having to remove the buckle from the belt first. Between the second and third loop, there is a small black loop where you can easily hang your keychain.

Arc'teryx LEAF xFunctional Pant AR 3The pants are fastened with a button and zipper.

Arc'teryx LEAF xFunctional Pant AR 4We have been using the pants since the release date and have worn them on various occasions, whether at the shooting range or strolling in the city. The pants have never felt out of place and have worn well. As for durability, the long-term test still needs to be passed, but so far, the material seems strong and robust. The pants come in jean sizes from 30"-38" and inseam lengths of 32" or 35". The sizes are true sizes - if you wear a 36" in jeans, you can also take a 36" xFunctional pant.
CONCLUSION: So, without exaggerating: these pants are the most comfortable we have worn in a long time. The construction is typically excellent for Arc'teryx and leaves nothing to be desired. The details are well thought out and perfectly executed. The only drawback is the lack of protectors or pockets for them, otherwise, there is nothing missing.

Price-wise, the pants are relatively inexpensive for Arc'teryx LEAF standards, costing around 120€ and available at TACWRK Berlin or HQG.de in Greenstone or Terra.
