REVIEW: Arc'teryx LEAF Assault Balaclava FR

05/18/2015By Redaktion

In the heat of battle, it is recommended to protect the tactical beard so that it is not singed. Of course, the unbearded face must also be protected, so it's no wonder that almost every manufacturer in the tactical field offers a fire-resistant balaclava in their lineup. Arc'teryx has recently added the Assault Balaclava FR to their LEAF program, which - as the name suggests - is fire-resistant.

Interestingly, the term "balaclava" is more commonly used in the military field than "balaclava," and it comes from the Crimean War around 1853. Since it was so cold there, knitted hats with eye and mouth holes were issued to British troops and named after the war zone of Balaklava.

When it comes to the Arc'teryx Balaclava, it's not about protecting against cold, so the "Ninja" cut was chosen - meaning it's not a 3-hole mask but just a slit for the eyes.

The material used is TenCate Defender™ 5.5 oz. mesh - a very lightweight and breathable mesh fabric that easily allows you to breathe through the fabric. The composition is 61% viscose, 24% aramid, 11% nylon, and 4% elastane.

The cut of the balaclava is head-hugging and therefore comes not in one size fits all, but in sizes S/M and L/LX. We had both sizes for testing and had to realize that a wearer with a 58cm head circumference - more of a large size - the balaclava in S/M fit like a glove, so it's definitely recommended to try it on. The seams of the hood are located at the back of the head and behind the ears, which increases comfort - no pressure points here.

If you want to have your mouth free, you can simply fold down the mouthpiece and have your whole face free. Sufficient fabric has been provided in the neck area so that the Assault Balaclava can also be tucked under the collar of a combat shirt and close cleanly.

Like many products in the LEAF series, this one is made in El Salvador.

CONCLUSION: With just 50g and airy mesh fabric, the Arc'teryx Assault Balaclava FR has everything you need to protect your head - and that with maximum comfort and style.

The Assault Balaclava is available for €40 at TACWRK (with thanks for providing the test) in the colors Wolf or Crocodile and sizes S/M and L/XL.
